matt,
Suggest you might want to look at a guide I published on e-Bay a couple of years ago on precisely this subject as related to old Britains. See; http://reviews.ebay.com/Collecting-W-Britains-Toy-Soldiers_W0QQugidZ10000000004502679. Although the books are primarily focused on vintage W. Britains I think you find some of interest. An additional excellent book on new toy soldiers is; The Collector's Guide to NEW TOY SOLDIERS, Metal figures from 1973 to the present day, Asquith, Stuart, Argus Books, 1991, ISBN 1 85486 051 8. Hope this is of some assistance.

I hate to plug my own books, but the two volumes on King & Country (Volume I is from the beginning of WWII through the second release of Arnhem and Volume III is on early K&C Glossy production from 1984 through 1996) already published (with another, smaller volume (IV) on K&C Vietnam and Modern Wars published very soon ;)) are a very useful resource for K&C collectors. Check them out on www.blurb.com.

Where can I find them? On the site you mentioned can't I find them. Do you have a direct link?

Thanks, Raymond!:) We should have a shorter, less expensive volume on K&C's treatment of Vietnam and Modern Wars up on the site very soon.;)

Norman Joplin's books on Britains and hollowcast figures are excellent and belong in your library.

Same goes for Richard O'Brien's books, "Collecting Toy Soldiers", which actually was reworked in four editions, ending with a third edition covering foreign makers and a fourth covering American makers.

John Garratt's "World Encyclopedia of Model Soldiers" is also valuable, as are other books that he wrote on the subject (I think I have three or four, not sure).

Louis' book is the only game in town for K&C.

James Opie's books, both the coffee table book on Britains, as well as the older smaller books (quarto size?).

I can list more titles tonight when I get home. Bob Bard's book, Philip O. Stearns, Hans Henning Roer's book on German fully round figures.

Prost!
Brad

No problem, Louis.

Your K&C volumes are on my radar screen, so I have the website ready at hand.;)

Raymond:)

Does anyone know of a good introductory book on collecting toy soldiers published in the last 5 years or so ?

It should be aimed at an adult who is interested in taking up the hobby of collecting miniatures from scratch.

There should be chapters on the history and evolution of toy soldier manufacturing, classification and identification of figures, scale and paint issues etc.

Thanks, Raymond.:)

Not from the past 5 years. The ones I know were published much longer ago.

Prost!

Brad,

It is a little surprising given that the hobby has been growing steadily over the past decade......new manufacturers, global interest etc.

Thanks, Raymond.:)

There is a very comprehensive list of Toy Soldier books (except for my books, I guess Bill is not a big K&C fan :p) on the Bill Hocker website, under "Toy Soldier Resources".:)

Send Bill the details on your books and he will likely add them to his list
