Hi,
having fun going through my collection and eliminating odds/ends/duplicates. Anyhow, found some interesting stuff today and need a little help.

First picture is a MAURO (brazil) figure, I found 6, anyone have any background on these

Next is a set (I think Napoleon is not part of ) that the base I can make out is
"..MODE" anybody have any idea? They have the copyright symbol too.

Next is 3 Scots/highlanders, etc, any idea on maker?

Finally, we have a chap with a "scottish" hat I have never seen before:

Thanks in advance, it has been fun digging!

Hmmm...a good set of puzzles, Tom!

Off the top of my head, I don't know about the "Mauro" piece, though that sounds familiar. The Frenchies also look familiar, but I have to look them up.

But among your Scots, the first figure in the pic looks like an Authenticast casting, repainted. That pose is very similar to one that Erickson used for almost every army he molded. The third figure in that picture reminds me very much of the homecasting molds sold by Castings, Inc, which was a successor to REB Toys, which came from Rappaport Bros., if I remember correctly. And the mold was based on a King-White figure, I think, as many of REB Toys' molds were. I may be wrong about that one, though.

Prost!

Thanks Brad,
I figured the scots were castings, and the last figure (scottish), I just don't know but a casting it could be.

Mauro I know them, but just no history.

The French have me stumped!

Thanks and if you find them, let me know

Tom

Hi Guys,

Some interesting looking figures here. I think the last guy is either a French Marine or Naval Landing party figure not Scottish. I have to do soe digging in my references to see if I can find anything on the others but they are certainly fun.

All the best

Dave

Dave,
maybe you are right, I was thinking he looked like a Hunter in Scotland!!

Dave, I think you're right, I agree that the last figure is a French naval party sailor.

Still looking for the other ones...

Interesting figures. I concur that the last one is a French matelot, maybe a marine. Certainly not Scottish.:D

The scottish casting on the extreme right looks like a casting of a dee-tail figure. There is a company who has a license to produce the molds made from those figures. As for the bonnet the prototype is made of feathers that look like boas strung together.

Hi, KV, I think you and I are talking about the same company for those molds. Here's their website: http://www.miniaturemolds.com/ Their catalog is a pastiche of figures from various manufacturers: Reeves (King White), Schneider (for the German toy soldier band), among others.

I had some of their molds but I gave them away, because the crispness of the castings was too soft, for my taste.

Prost!

Hi I think the French chaps are made by an English company from the mid to late 70s called M J Mode I will check with some old Millitary Modelling Mags I have and try and find info about them

Beating Retreat, you are right! That is what I could not make out, ok, please let me know if you find any more info!
Thanks

I checked and we are! I have that band mold set too. I bought it in Germany.

Hi, KV! Do you have the original Schneider molds, or the replicas made more recently (Hohmann in Cassel was one maker, who was still making replicas of the Schneider molds in a zinc alloy)? I have some original Schneiders, in bronze, but for the band, I have the later copies made here, and I find that they're harder to use than the originals. They don't warm up as easily, and the detail isn't as crisp as on the originals.

Herr Hohmann might have passed on by now; I wish had bought more of the molds from him. Nice crisp detail and easy to use. I have molds for marching infantry from Imperial German (with and without parade plumes), Austria, Bavaria, France and Great Britain or US, in tin hats, all from Hohmann.

Those half-round figures were my gateway into homecasting. From there, it was on to Prins August Seven Years War, to getting my own molds made.

Prost!

Aye it is a slippery slope. You are making your own molds? Any pics of the process? The mold manufacturer is called Meisterzinn. Nurnberger. Or it could be the other way around. Hard to tell from the packaging. I have the band, Line Infantry, and a cannon set up with cavalry. I do not use them much. They need to be blacked. That seems to be a pain.

So far, I've taken the wuss route, and had molds made (RLJ Casting, here in PA). I haven't taken the plunge yet, but I'm thinking of starting with molds to cast resin bits for my scale models.

RLJ casting? Did you do the sculpting?

Hi Re the Ids that you requested, Sorry no background on Mauro, you may want to drop a note to Rodney Hopson of Rodneysdimestoregallery.com he is very knowledgeable on South American and other obscure makers.

Re the figures that have MODE on them, these were made in Leicestershire England the name of the company was M. J Mode and it was owned by the late Jim Johnson from1970-1982,Sam Murray of Doncaster England then took over the moilds, but the comapny did not survive for long after that, MJ Mode did make a very nice series of items with a British Royalty flavor including Coronaton figures ,Royal British Legion and figures connected to the Royal Household and these were distributed and commissioned by Grahm Philip from Bridlington North Yorkshire, all of the above ,as far as I can trace are in business anymore.

I agree the Highlander in the group of 3 looks like Authenticast, they scertainly made that pose and depicted other troops in the same pose but I am unsure if this may be a conversion or not ?

The French Sailor firing ,your last image is undoubtably French Hollow Cast and is probably by a firm known simply as JF,if you are really curious and can wait I can give you a postive id if you remind me.

I have missed your previouys posts on the id of items,if you can direct me to the link I will be happy to try and help
Regards Norman

Norman and all, thanks very much. I am going to be listing these on ebay as I am cleaning out a lot of old one off stuff, from all over the globe, scale, etc. It has been fun finding and digging as this is a ton of stuff I purchased over the years on a whim, or in box lots, etc. I knew some of the stuff was good, but mostly diorama filler and one off figures. I am keeping most, but there is some that I am sure will find a new home. Anyhow, thanks again,
Tom
