I know it's a few months away, but wanted to solicit some opinions from the board...

For my 32nd bday, my girlfriend has offered to fly us out on a long weekend trip, just so happens that weekend is the same weekend as the Chicago Toy Show (Sept. 25th-27th).

As I'm new to the hobby and haven't been to a show, I wanted to find out what going to the shows was all about?

For this particular one, the Chicago Show, it is everything you can imagine.
Roomtrading starting thursday, two large floors of the hotel and every room filled with Toy Soldiers, meeting collectors, dealers, manufacturers from all around the globe, it is something like a "who's who" in the Toy Soldier world.
It sure would make an excellent birthday present for a Toy Soldier enthusiast :D.
Not so sure about the way your girlfriend will like it thoug

What exactly is room-trading?

I'll just have to keep reminder her who's birthday it is!:D

I'm sure there will be something else going on in Chi-town that weekend to keep her busy if need be!:D

Where did you get the idea that "my girlfiend is going to fly us for a long weekend together = I can spend the weekend at the toy show"? You may have one of the shortest toy soldier collecting careers on record.:D:D

You're punching holes in my strategy waaaaay to soon, I have at least three months to build her up for this!

Honestly, I'd be stoked if I could make it for even one day!

While the "Show" itself will be in the big halls of the hotel on sunday, many collectors, dealers, manufacturers already arrive on thursday or even wednesday and they set up their goodies in their rooms.
So the visitor can walk from room to room, chat with the people, look for the rare item maybe, make friendships, get to know the manufacturers.
In short the days before the actual show are filled with fun and excitement for the interested person.
One year I arrived thursday afternoon and checked in.
What I had coming for me until sunday evening were about 72 hours of seeing, breathing, listening and talking Toy Soldiers and nothing else, save a few hours of sleep every now and then :)
Some manufacturers like King and Country, Figarti, Britains by now usually host a special event within these days, like a lunch or dinner, where they announce new releases and present their companies.
These events will be announced here on the forum and you can sign up for them.
The Chicago Show and especially the days prior to it are the major event in the Toy Soldier World. Can't find better superlatives to describe it.

Maybe there is a big chance that KC will release his polystone airplanes in chicago...

Took my wife to the London Show. She was not amused!:D

My advice is - you go to the show, and let your girlfr. shop elsewhere!

Thats the best way to do it. :D

I never been to the Chicago show, and can not make it this year either.

Good thing about the Chicago Show is that it is across the street from one of the biggest malls in the Chicagoland area......Woodfield Mall. It's an excellent place to send the ladies too.

If there is one day you can go, go on Friday; that is the day the show hits high gear and you have the Figarti lunch and K & C dinner.

Of course Brad will be there on Thursday making sure there is nothing left for you on Friday.....tricky.....

Not to mention he'll be well fed on Friday; is anyone offering a breakfast by any chance, might as well make it a trifecta............

I have been bringing my wife for the last 17 years as mentioned above there are more than enough places for her to go shopping. The mall right across the street from the show is huge and there is an Ikia store right behind the hotel.
I will say this, if she is anything like my wife she will NOT enjoy roaming the hotel looking at toy soldiers.
Save the evenings for her and take her out to dinner.

Would love to come, but the coracle isn't really suited to crossing the pond.....keep going in circles:rolleyes::confused:

and if your wife does not like the Woodfield Mall, she can always visit Michigan Ave in Chicago.
