I had actually sculpted this many years ago but decided to redo the figure. It was converted from a Tradition toy casting to a miniature figure. The head was substituted with a spare Historex head and hat added. The rest of the body proportions was altered with putty. The legs were filed down and the dog was a le Cimier casting.

Although an instantly recognisable piece, I felt that the face could look more like Henry VIII, ears could be added and there were costume details which could be enhanced. Hence the following work in progress has commenced. I took front and back photos to show the progress.

That's another great conversion/improvement to a stock kit, Vic! You really improved his face, and I like your additional detailing to his jewelry.

Prost!

Hello Brad,

Thanks for your comments. Many of my earlier sculpts were done with Kneadatite putty which is a rubber-like hardened material. It takes detail very well but I don't like it. So what I am doing now is to carve away as much of this stuff as is possible and substitute with rock hard A&B putty. It also gives me a chance to add further details. I am still trying to improve this piece and will show the updated sculpt soon.

I am now using this painting by Hans Holbein for the proposed colours and details. Rgds Victor

The first photo shows the figure after the first stage of sculpting. Nose, cheeks and lower lip were sculpted on the face.

After I posted the Holbein painting, I decided to build up the shoulders on the figure, added an upper lip and moustache and the face is completed now. I also bulked out the back of the coat which will have to be cleaned up. I think that I may have to remove the figure from the base to redo the legs properly.

I carefully sawed the figure off at the feet and away from the base. I then inserted brass wire into the feet. I also removed and pinned the head to the body. I then built up the fur at the shoulders and filed hanging drapery on the back of the cloak. The legs were also filed down.

As usual, I use the weekends to get as much modelling in as is possible. I completed the sculpting of this figure. The fur coat was fully built up, obscuring the original necklace which had to be resculpted. The nose, forehead and jaw line was also reshaped. The legs were trimmed and leg calves were built up. I undercoated in matt enamels.

I find that posting my WIP photos fully blown up on this website really helps in highlighting errors in the making of the figures. There are a few touch-ups that I will be doing before I start the final painting.

I cleaned up the figure here and there and have started to paint the face. What big eyes he has...

I agree with you Vic - posting pics really does help you to spot errors and omissions whilst you're working on a piece. Nice going so far with old Henry.

Here's a pic of MY version - which was NOT painted by me. It's a Britains figure made for Madam Tussauds waxworks in London - made around the 1930's for the tourist/visitor trade at the Museum. I resisted the urge to repaint him - as he is worth too much in his original paint state:D jb.

Hello JB,

Nice figure. I think I saw that one in my Britains book. These early toy soldiers have a charm of their own which is not found in contemporary toy soldiers.

So I took a hard look at my piece and decided that the head was too large and am reshaping it to smaller proportions.

I also added details here and there to the back, using my trusty 1/12 Airfix King Henry VIII figure as a guide!

In between various modeling sessions, this figure was lurking nearby and I picked it up. Having decided that the head was not quite right, I whittled away the beard and sides of the head and also trimmed down the legs.

Hi Victor,

Hi John,

A delightful piece. I am guessing that this is the Tradition figure. If so, I do note that the figure base differs from my Tradition figure at the beginning of the thread.

I am still trying to convert my piece to resemble the Holbein painting, probably have to further pad out the gown.

I finally resculpted the whole head, trying to get a more Henry look.

Also resculpted the back. I will probably add more sculpted details before the next and hopefully, final painting stage.

Added a fringe to the lower part of the cloak. Reshaping the face and beard.
