Tradition Magazine- anyone else enjoy these? (1 Viewer)

I was lucky to be able to pick up nearly fifty of these for a few dollars a year or two ago.

They are excellent and I refer to them quite a lot. The problem with them being that referring to one magazine usually leads to several hours browsing through the lot.

They are titled Tradition- The Journal of the International Society of Military Collectors. They were produced in the seventies and I gather Tradition of London had some involvement as their figures are featured and advertised within.

They are of a high quality and have an eclectic mix of articles- not all Napoleonics but plenty of Colonial India, Schutztruppe and the like. They also contain several pages of prints near the centre.

Does anyone else collect these? Can someone add to the story behind the magazine and its demise?

I have 4 of these wonderful magazines, and in fact, 2 of them are the editions you are showing in the image !!! I bought editions 54 - 57 to get the full colour plates of the British Army.

I bought mine at a second hand book store in London in 2000, but on vsiting Tradition of London in Mayfair, I saw that they had the whole series on sale.

I've just checked out their website http://www.traditionoflondon.com/and see the magazines are available for £10.00 ea... more that I paid.

Goto the left had side of the page, click onto Books & Magazines, and then there is a listing of the magazine, and further clicking brings up a destiled listing of the articles in each edition. If you like to do some clever "copy & paste" into a word doc you could make your own index!!

I don't know whey they stopped production, but maybe you could ask E-mail Steve Hare the Sales Manager shop@traditionoflondon.com who is most helpful.

The magazine was produced by Tradition, then known as Norman Newton Ltd., and ran to 76 issues before it's demise which was due to costs, the price of colour printing at that time becoming too high. Several issues were designated as special issues, one was on Waterloo, one on the Gurkhas, one on the Crimean War and two on the Indian Army. At that time it was the only Military magazine on the market and the contributors were the leaders in that field, Brigadier Peter Young, Bob Marrion, the Fosten brothers, lt. Colonel Nicholson etc. There were several companies within the group, Norman Newton Ltd., Norman Newton Military Antiques and Belmont-Maitland Publishing, and when the lease on the premises at 49 Hertford St.,ran out it was decided to amalgamate all three under the name of Tradition which was done when the company moved to 188 Picadilly. These are brilliant scources of information I have about 35 issues no 76 being the last one and the first I bought, I also have the 2 Indian army specials which are absoloutely brilliant. I also have the Gurkha special and the one all about the 21st lancers excellent magazines

Had a few dozen, many years ago. Sold them when I moved, keeping one on Indian Lancers/Army. Great magazine for the plates and articls. -- Al
 
Agreed . . . they were terrific magazines! Would that I could find an ebook distributor that had them on-line. Now that would be almost as good!

Have a reasonable file of Tradition issues, an excellent magazine. Articles covered a broad span of history and were extremely well researched. Was able to obtain several excellent prints from the publisher at the time. Another more recent excellent series, which I believe is also defunct, is REGIMENT Magazine. Truly unfortunate.

Yes, it was a great magazine. I've got a stash of back issues that I've picked up over the years, some good articles, and some of the color plates in the middle of each issue were reprints of series from the turn of the century, very useful references. Where else would I find an article on cuff and collar lace patterns of the Imperial German grenadier regiments?

As has been mentioned, Tradition still has a stash of copies of some of the issues, so you can buy them online.

Yes REGIMENT was great too, I have all exept the very first magazine, and make great use of them, particularly when painting the Scottish Regiments, as many of the colour plates show me whats needed to get the figures just right.

Maybe sometime another published may take up the banner and keep them going??

Thanks for the replies. I'm glad to see others enjoy these as well and that they are still available.

I have the Ghurka and Indian Army specials amongst my pile and have some old Rose miniatures Indian cavalry figures. No doubt I'll need these for reference.

Thanks for mentioning the old Regiment magazine- another one to look out for.

Isn't there also a French Language version with the same title? I believe it's still in print?
 
There is a French periodical of the same name, but it is not the same magazine. The French one, which is heavily centered on the Napoleonic era, is available for downloading om several e-book sites. Alas, I've not been able to find the British magazine on ebooks . . . perhaps because back copies are available from the publisher.

Speaking of the old military modeling magazines, you can get the complete "Campaigns" series on CD now. Mataka.org, a photography firm that takes photos at many of the exhibitions in our hobby, obtained copyrights to reproduce the series on disc and sell it. If you're missing a number or two-I was missing part 1 of an article on Prussian cavalry standards from the Seven Years War-you might want to contact them and order the set. I got a copy last fall.

The first issue covered The Life Guards (obviously:)) of which I have more than one copy I could easily scan anything you need.
