A great set, but did you look at it, too, and say to yourself, "I'd paint that differently, and I'd paint that differently..." :D

Prost!

I'm rather late to this thread. Kogu, you asked for some photos in post #1. Below you will find a tradition casting I've just finished painting.

I don't know why the photos are so small. I'm still struggling with this aspect of posting.

Nice, Russell! Aren't Tradition's really great figures? Hope you can resolve your picture issue, it'll be nice to see a larger pic of your work.

Prost!
Brad

My 2nd try.

These are better than the painted sets! Maybe you should be painting for Tradition! I especially like the way you do eyes, to me a weak link in Tradition´s painted figures. Congrats on your talent and patience!

Paulo

Excellent painting! Tradition sculpts are one of the best for glossies and you proved that in your painting. Thanks for the pics.

Today I finished painting this Tradition casting identified as a Sergeant, Italian Bersaglieri 1900

He's ready to go on duty tomorrow, shelf #3.:)

Nicely done, Russell! You're another painter, like Jeff, you've captured the traditional toy soldier look very well.

Prost!

I agree, nice rendition in a gloss finish :)

Jeff

Btw Brad, I didn't capture any of them - they were all paid for! :D:D

Very nice work Russell. Do you order directly from Tradition or is there a dealer here in Canada ?

Hi Scott, You asked,
Do you order directly from Tradition or is there a dealer here in Canada ?

There are three possibilities that I know of.

1. Going directly to the store in London. I don't want you to get the impression I do this all the time, but a few years back we were on a hoiliday in London and so I visited the shop and bought more castings than I could afford. I'm still painting them. You should have seen me going through the security check at the airports. They would look and look until they finally figured it out. The wonder of buying them at the store are the sale items and especially items not advertised in the catalogue.
2. At the Hackensack Show someone sells Tradition castings and I've bought some there (very early November each year).
3. Maitlands, out of Godrich Ontario, carries Tradition, and I believe he will order the castings you choose. You can always ask him. His name is Ron Daniels and he's very nice. Tell him I sent you. He is on the net at http://www.toysoldiers.com/

Also, I must say that the Tradition castings are very good with metal grooves and highlights making painting much easier.

Finally, I'm no expert, but I'd gladly show you how I paint. Of course, for all I know you're already painting.

Thanks for the info Russell, I don't really paint a whole lot but I have dabbled in it.
I have dealt with Ron Daniels and he is indeed a very helpful chap.

Thanks again

Scott

Here is my latest in painting Tradition castings. Just finished this morning.

It is 1900 and we see the three Mangini brothers being photgraphed at a belvedere in the Italian Alps. They recently joined the Italian Alpini Battalion and are leaving for their first tour of duty in the mountains.

Hi, guys, if I may presume, the vendor Russell is thinking of is probably Rich Dutkin, of Dutkin's Collectables in Cherry Hill, NJ. Here is his Web address:

http://www.dutkins.com/

Scott, you'll probably find someone closer to home, but certainly worth a look at Rich's site.

I've bought pretty much all of my Tradition castings from Rich.

Prost!

Another nice set of figures Russell

and Brad, thanks for the site. I already have that bookmarked, sometimes forget what websites I have and who is selling what. LOL

OK, I've been talking about my Tradition figures for so long, here are some pics!

These are of the British Army in the Seven Years War, which can be painted as any unit that served on the Continent in Germany, or in North America (with the exception of the few Scottish regiments). I'm painting them as the 20th Foot at Minden.

Here is a firing line:

Here's a side view of some of the grenadiers, plus the ensign and drummer:

Tradition20thFoot3.jpg

Here are the other grenadiers, plus a company officer directing fire:

Tradition20thFoot4.jpg

The mounted officer in the background is not Tradition, but was sculpted by Martin Tabony for the Irish Toy Soldier Museum, for their series of the 18th Regiment of Foot, "Royal Irish". I may repaint him in the future, at least, to fix the face.

Here is a shot of the company officer:

Nuts! This one's a little out of focus :( :

I like these castings, I was very excited, when these first appeared. For the Seven Years War, there are very good and very many Prussians, and some Austrians, Russians and French, but there were precious few British figures for that period. Just the odd Stadden, or Gammage's Rose Miniatures. These really fill a gap. And I like the variety. There's the grenadier whose cap has been knocked off, another with a bandaged head (those are repeated for the hatmen as well). By varying the hair colors and slight adjustments of the limbs, you can make a varied line of soldiers.

Eventually, I plan on collecting a platoon of grenadiers, and maybe one of hatmen, too, for a display of the Battle of Minden.

Enjoy, prosit!
Brad
