I was in Gettysburg this past weekend attending the Fall In wargaming convention and I had a great time. The new visitors center is spectacular, they have spend 16 large on revamping the cyclorama, it is incredible. They have added battlefield debris and landscaping in the foreground to give it a nice 3D effect.

Also, the park service has done an incredible job clearing out trees and restoring the battlefield to it's 1863 look; they cleared out loads of trees near Houcks Ridge and Devils Den to the point where you can see clear back to the Confederate lines and see the route Bennings Georgians took when they assaulted the Union left flank............

Any pictures to post on your trip. I have not been to Gettysburg since the restoration.

I am green with envy. I love Gettysburg. Its not as beautiful as Chickamauga or many of the others in TN or VA, but man oh man it (Gettysburg) sure does it for me. If I were to live anywhere near the place, I would spend every weekend walking the entire park, and then some.

Sorry, no pics.

Michael, the funny thing is I go there three times a year and each time, I do a quick jaunt around the park, then focus on one particular area. Been doing this for about three years now and I am still amazed at the new stuff I find every time. The battlefield is HUGE, basically nine battles fought over three days.

Amazing.

I made my pilgrimage to Gettysburg in 2000 for the annual (137th) re-enactment of the Battle of Gettysburg.

The locals were very impressed by the big bloke with the Aussie accent who seemed to know more about the place than the other Yank (or Reb :D) tourists from other parts of America.

Man I brought some stuff back with me. T-shirts, videos and of course Toy Soldiers.

Great place!

Cheers Pete.

Warrior- I just found this thread. Did not mean to duplicate everything from the Annapolis thread under KC. That Park Service sure has done a fantastic job. Gettysburg is a great day trip or even just a great break from hum-drum every day routine. I consider myself very fortunate to be so close. -- lancer

I envy anyone who lives close to the majority of the ACW battlefields. I spent an entire summer just touring for the pure joy of seeing just one more cannon on display. Drove my kids crazy but I was one happy camper.

I envy anyone who lives close to...ANY battlefields.

Minnesota isn't exactly the hotbed. I remember growing up in Iowa that in my Iowa history class they talked about the one cannon shot sent from Missouri over the border. Pretty fierce!

My folks did move to Keokuk in extreme SE Iowa on the Mississippi River, and there was a good sized Civil War cemetary there. I guess there had been a hospital in town.

I need to get back to Gettysburg. It's been a couple of years now. I need to do some visiting to the Culp's Hill area. Last time I was up there I saw Pete Rose touring the down town shops.

Pete,
Minnesota may not be a hotbed for battlefield, but the 1st Minnesota's daring charge late in the second days action at Gettysburg saved the Union's bacon that day.

They took horrific casualties, over 80% killed or wounded.
