U.S. Law Enforcement Questions. (1 Viewer)

From my limited knowledge the police here seem to operate on a very similar
basis , they use the armed offenders squad for firearms related incidents.
Probably one of the reasons NZ police try and poach English police officers.
Ever thought of emigrating ;).

There have been a good few from our force who have gone to both NZ and Australia, due to recent advertising campaigns, but I'm too long in the tooth to consider upscuttling to the other side of the world, however tempting it might be. ;)

Njja,
Used to carry th HK P7 . Best sidearm in the world, bar none. Caveat is that it requires extensive training for proper deployment. We evaled the Benelli in the mid 90's and I found it to be awful for aimed firing, the sights made you plant your cheek in the stock. Mike

I agree training is always the key. The new Eotec sights would work well on
the Benelli. I liked the option to exchane shots without reloading, and the
Slug, Buckshot, Slug combo is difficult to face:eek:.

I was pretty miffed at the time. Legal ownership has always been subject to pretty stringent checks and processes, but after Hungerford (legally owned firearms being used in out and out mindless massacre by one individual over the edge), the government imposed even more strict controls. Then after Dunblane (similar story), they all but wiped out handgun ownership and rifles were subject to extreme controls (i.e. no semi-autos other than .22 rimfire, no magazine fed weapons etc, etc.). In the end, it just knocked all of the enjoyment out for me. Still, I have an occasional blat at the police range with the police issue firearms, so all is not lost.

Its really a shame when events cause citizens to lose their rights. Here events have a similar effect but we have the Bill of Rights to protect us.

Its never the licensed people that commit these acts, its the criminals. Here in my state many people such as myself are licensed to carry concealed weapons. Its not the OK Corral, no gunfights in the news. Just trained people and law enforcement agents with weapons. In an emergency one of these people could come to the assistance of their fellow citizens or a Uniformed law enforcement agent should it be required.

In my 12 years of law enforcement, I have never had a problem with a citizen who is lawfully allowed to carry a firearm. In those crimes involving firearms it is 99% of the time an illegally obtained firearm.

Wow! You should come to Michigan then. I started out at DPD "Detroit Police Dept." and let me tell you day in day out I have dealt with those who have illegally and legally obtained firearms. Almost every house in Detroit that you go in has 2 things bars on the doors and windows to keep the bad guys out and a shotgun in case they get in. Now you might say well those are shotguns, rifles etc... and that the majority of offenses involving handguns involve illegally obtained firearms. With that argument I would have to disagree as well since I have run into numerous domestics where one individual has used his or her weapon that they obtained lawfully and could carry with a permit to assault, threaten or even commit suicide with. Then again Hawaii isn't Detroit. There were neighborhoods that we rode 3 deep in since the Dept. would receive death threats from local gangs. You would drive down a street and receive coordinated gunfire. The bad guys would have the armor piercing rounds while we would have the junk that would barely penetrate a car door. I was young and dumb when I worked for Detroit and I thought I was invincible until the two partners I had in Detroit loss their spouses (1 male and 1 female officer). One shot in the head with a shotgun on a standard domestic call where the man had a legal shotgun and the other gunned down on the east side by a gang banger. That was enough for me I got out and now I work in a suburb of Detroit where I carry a primary and secondary glock on my person and have an ar15 and a remington in the car.

I will say Hawaii isn't Detroit and the City of Worcester isn't Detroit either but it is a large city. I will reiterate that lawfully held weapons were never a problem or maybe I should say a major problem. Gang bangers and criminals tend not to have lawfully held weapons.

As far as what people do to each other, whatever is handy will do. People don't need guns to hurt each other or the police or to commit suicide.

That's about right Larr, In DC in the mid 90's we took over patrol for 5th District Metro after a corruption case in NE. We rode 4 to a car and also took ambushing fire for the first couple weeks until the locals figured out we wer'nt playing around. No lawfully obtained weapons recovered in DC crimes I can think of except a lone homeowner protecting his property that was grandjuried by his "peers". Mike

I must agree, as I stated eariler here in Georgia, we have standard street

crime, I do not recall any instances of it being the result of an indivual with

a concealed weapons permit.

Citizens with clean records and proper training should be allowed to carry

weapons if they choose to. You cannot expect the police to be everywhere

every minute of the day. I still remember, I believe it was Luby's Cafateria in

Texas many years ago where several people were killed and others terrorised

by a lone gunman nutjob while they ate their dinners.

Many lives could have been saved had an off duty police officer, or other

trained individual been present at that horrible event.

We also need stricter laws against people that use firearms, or other

deadly weapons in the commission of a crime.

I agree with that 100% it doesn't have to be a firearm. If someone is determined they will use just about anything.

So how did you go from Mass. to Hawaii? That had to be a major decision. Do you have a Union and how is the pension?

It was a big decision. My wife is from Waimea, Hawaii which is on the big island. She was sick of the New England weather. I went from patrolling a city with 30 cops on the road with me to 4officers for a 150 square mile area. We do have a union here. The State of Hawaii Police Officers(SHOPO). And yes I do trade patches for anyone interested.

Larry:

It would seem to be a wonderful place to live! Being an old surfer.....its

considered heaven on earth.!
