UK Customs fees from the USA (1 Viewer)

The other nightmare scenario will be if the US starts a national sales tax. Being an online retailer I would have to collect sales tax from every US sale. Then I would have to pay quarterly to fifty different states.

Yeah, I've been looking at that nightmare too. The accounting costs will put many small businesses out of business overnight.

I can't even begin to imagine what would happen which leads me to believe that the gov't will either find a way to make it easier for us or the small business associations will ban together and revolt in some way - either ignoring the tax altogether, lobbying against it, supporting politicians who oppose it, etc.

I just can't see what amounts to multi-multi-billion dollar industry of individuals being regulated in such a way.

I feel that it is the state citizens who should list what they've purchased from out of state and file that along with their taxes.

Very few if any would actually do it but they don't and won't get penalized so why should we?

We are one nation and I think we need one solution - not 50 individual ones.

We pay nothing online yet but believe me our government will find a way to get their sticky fingers in there eventually.

:D The government is usually pretty on top of finding ways to tax. It's only been what, like 14 years since online transactions have bee taking place? I'd say the gov't fell asleep at that wheel.

If the US gov't instituted a flat 4-5% flat tax can you imagine what that revenue would be?

When you see the actual lists of taxes we pay it's 100 times worse than when we revolted.I understand it's modern times and we have many more services taken care of by the Fedreral, state and local governments (many more than there should be)but there is a breaking point and I just don't see how people in other countries where it seems that taxes are worse can live a good life.

And of course our out of control property taxes here in NJ thanks to the NJEA. Finally a Governor who is trying to rein them in.

Yes everybody is hollering about the cuts but they will learn to adapt.NJ has a budget larger than a lot of countries and we lose business here because of regulations and taxes.

Though in the USA don't you pay sales tax which is the equivalent of our VAT?

Here in California, The sales Tax is between $8.25 to $8.75 (depends on the county/ city) for every Hundred dollars you spend. So that $500.00 dollars worth of items, that cost $700 dollars plus in the UK. Would be Between $541.25 to $543.75, here in California.

Not an eBay sale, but I think it goes with this topic. This an email I just received from a first time customer in the UK.

I placed an order with your company on the 3/5/10.
I paid for my item straight away which included P&P.
I would like to know why I was charged an additional £11.49 customs charge.
If I had know I was going to be charged extra I would never have placed the order!!

I am amazed that this guy is unaware of VAT taxes in the UK. And that he thinks that I am responsible for collecting and implementing this tax on him. I ship lots of orders to the UK and this is a first.

Seriously, I received the same email from somebody who ordered from my website. I wonder if it's the same person.

They were adamant that I pay it too.
