I bought some sets from Hong Kong, the manufacturer was excellent, great service and great figures. Really happy with them, so no need to say who it was.

The price they put in for the value was £223.20, which was correct, i was told via email i owed Customs charges of £64.64, excluding the import company fees, which were OK so no problem with them, however i thought that was a bit much. Paid it, got the documents through and on the form there had been added £100, which is a 'VAT Adjustment for HMRC in cargo more' and the charges were on £323.20. Never come across this before, has anyone else? Is it correct?

[h=1]IMPS04400 - Value for import VAT: normal rules: methods of calculating import VAT[/h]
The following methods may be used to calculate the value for import VAT. The first method requires actual costs to be declared. Method 2 provides ways of estimating incidental costs to be included in the import VAT value. The methods are non-hierarchical, and individual importers may use whichever method best suits their particular circumstances.
[h=2]Method 1[/h] This method requires actual costs to be declared at the time the goods are imported. The time of importation is the time at which a customs debt becomes due, or would have become due if the goods were subject to duty. Post-clearance amendments should be submitted in instances where costs are later found to be incorrect (eg if there is a change to the place of consignment, or if additional storage costs are incurred).
[h=2]Method 2[/h] The following nationally agreed rates may be used as an alternative to actual costs. The rates are intended only for international movements of goods that terminate in the UK, and represent average costs of handling, storage, Customs declarations and transport from the point of arrival in the UK to destination. If importers/agents use these rates, Customs will not require post-entry amendments.
[h=3]Rates (based on chargeable weight)[/h]
Group A \nAirfreight40 pence per chargeable kilo or a minimum amount of £100 to be added to the value at the time of importation, whichever is the greater.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated. However, i have been charged twice for the import, is that correct to be charged twice?
first - £100 added to the £223.20 = £323.20.
second - charge £64.64 [+ company fee] on the £323.20, which is 20% and what i am assuming is the VAT.

Barkman like you I recently had an order from HK attract customs dues, it certainly is a pisser offer but think back to all those other times they haven't. You may continue to attract custom charges on packages and if you do it's only charges you should be paying but have managed to avoid in the past. It's a gamble we take when ordering from abroad, my packages from US routinely do.Your £64.64 sounds sbout right adding VAT and the handling charge. You can always complain if you feel that strongly or just suck it up !

Cheers, i do not mind paying the import tax, previously on other threads i have highligted i did not mind paying, as having been in the Royal Navy and also had public sector jobs, my attitude is we are not paying taxes we are paying for Doctors, Nurses, Teachers, the Military, Customs [keeping drugs etc out of the country], plus a mulitude of other things we need. What my question was is having i been charged twice? The £64.64 was without the company's that handled it fees, which were under £10 and expected as they are providing a service and need to be paid.

The £100 is a freight charge as this is also vatable it is added to the total amount . VAT / Duty is then raised on the full amount .

Barkmann / Goldman007

Off topic, but you shouldn't be using multiple accounts / names on the forum as it goes against the spirit in which the forum is supposed to be used and it breaks Rule 9.

Correct - error on my part as i set the Goodman007 up for a friend and it is still on my laptopand the logins are saved and i used the wrong one. As a honest gesture i have delete the Goldman off my laptop to stop the confusion. Thanks for pointing that out and the other account will not be used by me again. Have done it before and got grief from my mate for posting in his name.

There's no excuse for having more than one profile and that has to be the worst excuse ever.

You've been pulled up on this stuff before and you're still playing games.

Rather sad to be honest.
