Wonder if anyone else.... and I am sure there is.... had the frustrating opportunity of trying to pack up their toy soldiers.....first off it took me 7 hours straight without stopping...second off many of them I couldn't get back in the box properly so I tended not to close the lids on the boxes too tight...second off I was sweating buckets trying not to break any of them....I have to admit after that experience I almost wanted to stop buying them all together and thought about selling them but then again after all of that I couldn't imagine the work it would take to sell them....it truthfully was the worst part of packing not to mention once I got all the boxes in one room how much space they all took up...UNREAL!!!

I don't think WW2 collectors will have the same problems as Napoleonic collectors...each figure has its own box...the calvary WAS THE WORST!!!!

I'm sure you could come up with something worse to do, like yardwork, housework, carwork, work... Enjoy! Mike
 
It is a lot of work for sure. I had to do it a few months ago. I packed up a collection of sports memorabilia several years ago, and it took me several days!!!!

Hi Wellington,

Having also recently moved, I know your pain. I went through the same routine: carefully packing figures in their boxes, finding a number of the figures did not fit properly in the boxes and, consequently either tranporting the boxes without lids or with partially closed lids and then discovering how much room my collection required when the total collection was massed together.

My task was further complicated by having to move many Samurai figures and a number of connoisseur pieces that possessed sharp swords, delicate helmets, long lances, and waving banners. Upon moving everything, I announced to my wife that I would never, ever move again! We will live and we will die in this new house! :D

The good news is that we successfully accomplished the task! From my experiential perspective, you deserve a medal for a job well done! My compliments to you for your persistence and care in moving your wonderful collection.

Hmmm, I'll be moving inside of two years and you jokers have succeeded in making me paranoid! 12"x12" boxes for all of my figures with bubblewrap and foam peanuts or I'm not moving! Do you hear that, my beloved Theresa? I'm not moving! :D

delegated the job to Missus Heid about 6 weeks ago. So if anythin gets broken - I can just blame her.....:cool::cool:

I am also in the process getting all of them figures packed into K&C boxes. It took me 5 hrs nonstop just to pack my Berlin 1938 line.

I still have AK and NAP and a few WW2 and WW1 to pack...

I am planning to move to a new apartment in December...
 
Getting all the boxes down from the loft is a long enough process,before you even start boxing the figures up!

I moved my collection 4 times - not just my K&C but all 6,000 or so soldiers, 16 dioramas, 200+ armored vehicles, 100+ aircraft & 3 ships from multiple manufacturers. Even with the generous help of multiple friends, it was an enormous pain in the @ss!! Once I got everything in the museum, I told my wife my next move, I'm going to be in a pine box (i.e. a coffin).:D:p;)
 
I recently went through the same thing, and most of mine never had boxes. Thankfully I was able to obtain some great packaging through work and the move went smoothly.

Agreed moving is a nightmare. :eek:

But a short while ago I moved my modest amount of K&C, Conte and Britains AWI figures (600 - 650 or so). A friend of mine, who is a professional mover suggested a really easy idea that worked perfectly and eliminated the time to carefully package each figure (or sets of figures) back in the original box. (Only the figures, not any vehicles, etc. )

He suggested Styrofoam cups (or paper cups) with a few peanuts in each to hold the figures securely in place. Then place each cup upright in a box. When you have the bottom layer covered simply place a layer of foam board over the top for a second and third layers. Only took about 1 hour (1 ½ ). The cost of the paper cups was only a few dollars and I had a billizion peanuts from all the packages that I had received in the past.

The only point to mention is that I moved them myself and not via a moving company. Not a single bayonet bent or chip of paint. Also the resetting them back up was easy.

But good luck to everyone facing moving their army!!
 
The styrofoam cup w/peanuts is a really good idea.

However, I moved between two states about a year and a half ago. Id be more hesitant to take that approach when a moving company and truck are doing the transporting.

Sadly, I still havent unboxed my figures. There is not much room in my condo (rented). Plus, I am waiting for the housing market to settle before making another purchase. So the combination of not being in a relatively permanent situation, and remembering the pain of getting everything boxed up, leaves my figures in the dark, so to speak.
 
also moved a few years back. i experienced all the same problems. moved the soldiers myself, left the other stuff to proffesionals. won't willingly do it again. found that original boxes were best when available. packed many old Britains and Somersets individually. took time but broke nothing. now keep all my smaller boxes organized by manufacturer and period in larger, labeled boxes for ease of storage and ease of locating a particular set when need be. my next move will also be of pine box variety.- lancer
 
Yep, moving a toy soldier collection is a pain. We moved recently and it took me days to pack my collection. The WWII stuff wasn't so bad, but Napoleonics have so many delicate bits it's hard to get them back in their boxes without bending bayonets, swords or plumes. On the upside, unpacking and setting them up in your new home is fun - it's like receiving the biggest shipment you ever ordered!

As A pending move is in my future I have given this much thought. I plan on

buying tons of the large plastic tubs available at Walmart or Target.

Layer of foam on bottom, original boxes across in two rows perhaps 6 high

lid snapped in place. Perhaps 48 to 50 boxes per tub, which can be stacked

probably 4 high.....should do the trick.:eek::D
 
:eek:Wow the cup idea sounds great wish I had thought of it before...:mad:...Truthfully I really really underestimated the time and care it has taken...and still I was unsatisfied with my packing in some instances...the sad part is I'm only moving 2 blocks away....:eek:

ONE THING CAME TO MIND AFTER THE ORDEAL..THERE WILL BE NO ONE IN MY FAMILY WHO WOULD TAKE THE TIME AND CARE AS I DID...NOT BECAUSE THEY ARE CARELESS BUT NOONE UNLESS YOU ARE A TOY SOLDIER COLLECTOR WILL EVER APPRECIATE THE TIME AND MONEY SPENT ON THESE THINGS..ONLY TO TAKE 6 TO 8 HOURS OR EVEN DAYS TO WRAP THEM UP.....THERE IS NO WAY!!!!

I like the cup idea too. Also not moving is a good idea. Hope no one important sees that.
