If you're not into beach landings but still want one, use it with a bridge:

The picture is not ver clear but I think you'll need a lot more floating devices than the
two landing crafts that are visible. Still a nice idea for a dio.

Basically that's a pontoon bridge (not unlike the one from Build-a-Rama) and the LCVPs are running their engines to counter the effects of the river's current. Otherwise the bridge might take on the shape of a rainbow and/or be pulled out of position by a strong current.

A good bridging scene might get expensive but it would be impressive!

it would make a great subject for a dio. Shows how much fuel the allies had to use landing craft to stabalise a bridge

British used landing craft on the Rhine crossing + Bufflo, I've seen photos of the landing craft being driven up on tank transporters^&cool

Very interesting pic, never scene landing craft used this way...ingenious use of existing resources. Thanks for sharing. ^&cool

Gary is right, the use of the LCVPs are to maintain the position of the bridge. Since there is nothing to anchor such a temporary brigde to the river bottom, the landing craft are used to keep it from 'bowing' with the current.
