I'm sure everybody has seen this already...I don't like it...

but as much money as USPS is hemorraging...their decision to cancel Saturday mail delivery is supposed to save them tons of money...this means we all will wait a little longer for our deliveries...

I think it will start in August they said...

I'm just amazed that they lose so much money...I rarely go into my Fedex/UPS stores...but when I do...there is hardly ever a line of customers ahead of me...or anybody in there for that matter...

but when I go into my USPS branch...there is usually 3-8 people in line...sometimes more...sometimes a little less...but always decent traffic...

I'm just amazed they lose so much money!

Maybe hiring Samwise Gamgee was the problem.

Frankly I'm amazed they don't lose triple the 15 billion they report. It's not that they don't have tons of money coming in. The problem is they are the worst run business on the planet.

How many outlets? I have one Post Office and an Annex. There must be at least twenty-five FedEx and UPS servicing outlets.

I thought the original message was parcel deliveries 6 days a week, letter mail 5 days a week ^&confuse

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Postal Service plans to drop Saturday delivery of first-class mail by August in its latest effort to cut costs after losing nearly $16 billion last fiscal year, the cash-strapped mail agency said on Wednesday.

The plan would save about $2 billion a year, the Postal Service said. The mail agency will still deliver packages six days a week and will not change post office operating hours.

I have noticed a few times in the last year were either Fed Ex or UPS will be the carrier for a package I have coming. I can track it all the way from its origin till it gets to my town, where the tracking app says 'delivered to local postal carrier' or something to that effect. Anyway, a day or two after it has arrived in my town, the Post Office will deliver it. I really don't like tracking a package for a couple days, watching it cruise along on time, only to have it sit at my local post office for a few more days till the Post Office 'gets around to it'! (That's a mail clerk's direct quote.)

Why do the two big companies even bother to tranfer packages to the Postal Service? Maybe I just don't understand business, but how is that efficient for anybody?

It's not all that bad Michael, we have never had Saturday postal service :(

Canada did have Saturday delivery until February 1969. It was scrapped to save money.

USPS may be badly run, but one of the reasons they lose money is low postal rates - about half what is charged in Canada to break even.

this is so true...even with the new postal rate increase...it's still the cheapest way to ship for an individual...

my first experience with International shipping was a box to Greece...

I went to UPS...they quoted me $113...

I took it to USPS...they quoted me $14...

I have always thought the problem is this - it is a government run debacle, yet they say it runs on its own? Right there is the problem, it is either public or private - not both. If the government took full role, then it would be ok, b/c they lose money at everything they do anyhow and it doesn't matter (just print more benjamins.) or take it PRIVATE and find out what it really takes to make it work. There would be full labor cost studies, transportation, logistics, etc. I also read that a Union is part to blame due to unrealistic labor costs and demands. Go figure, it has all the major headaches of any business, but it also has congressional oversight! How the heck does anyone expect this outcome to be any different?????

The USPS has those priority mail boxes in different sizes. Anything that fits, ships at the cost of the box. That was good when I was selling on ebay.

Cutting service is not the way to serve your customers. We need to privatize postal delivery and then the carrier can compete with FedEx and UPS and other delivery services.

Prost!

I did not know that Terry, but I have only been here since 1990 :)

Good thing you are not here then, we had no mail at our office on Monday. Our mail man was sick (and instead of having a relief carrier they give it to the mail man that works on the next route) and he didn't have time to deliver ours. Not much you can do about it either !

Guys,
Received a large parcel from Brad (Jazzem) yesterday that was posted that at a USPS Office in Madison NJ on 3rd December, 2012. I tracked it and it arrived at the NY ISPS International Parcels centre 3 days later. Then it totally disappeared off the grid until Brad opened up an investigation with USPS in early January, 2013. It suddenly appeared back on the tracking on 21st January, 2013 still at NY ISPS International Parcels. They finally sent it and arrived in the Land of OZ on Friday 1st February and was delivered to me on Tuesday 5th February.
The outside of the box had taken a severe beating but thanks to Brad's outstanding packaging, all inside was safe and sound. Many thanks to Brad.
After my last episode with a parcel from Georgia going for a little holiday in China for two and a half weeks on its way to OZ, I have great reservations about the service of USPS.
Cheers Howard

They should pay Lance Armstrong another $30 million. I don't understand how not delivering the mail on Saturday saves money. From what I understand they are still delivering packages on Saturday. Are they firing people or cutting pay? That doesn't seem to be the case and there is just that much more mail to be sorted and delivered on Monday.

I've had problems with the New York ISPS many times. Parcel sat there for two weeks or more.
Never happens if the port of entry or exit is Los Angles or San Francisco. In and out in one day.

I mailed the package on December 3 and got to their NY facility on December 6 where it basically sat until January 21. Quite amazing. I've mailed a few packages to Oz and never had a problem. This one was a corker.

They are only canceling delivery of letter mail and magazines, not packages. Toy Soldiers will still be delivered!!!! So not to worry. Main reason to maintain delivery of packages is medical supplies and commerce.

PS. A good note is that BILLS are considered letter mail.
