Very Cool Airplane Find (1 Viewer)

Thomas Gunn made a 1/30 Horten Ho-229 Flying Wing in 2015; with a clear canopy and landing gear. The HO-229 was test flown and was faster than the ME-262 using the same two jet engines due to the very low drag of the flying wing design. The National Air and Space Museum has a preproduction prototype they are restoring.

It's possible to modify and add one, but it's some relatively major surgery. The existing canopy can be used as a mold for a vacuformed clear replacement, and a cockpit scratch-built and dropped in. It requires:

  • Cutting off the existing canopy along the bottom frame, where it meets the fuselage
  • Routing out the material where the cockpit will go
  • Scratch-building a cockpit tub and dropping it in
  • Maybe add a crew figure or two
  • Vacuforming a new canopy out of clear material and attaching it
  • Same goes for the gunner's position at the tail

Not impossible, but certainly requires some care along with the skill.

Prost!

don't be parking that nazi thing on a shelf next to my huey! {sm4}
I see now I have to lay down some conditions! hahaha

putting aside the movie tie in, from a sculpting/modelling point of view, this piece would command about 10 to 15 quid at a British flea market and wouldn't have many buyers at that.

Hi Ray,
Yes, saw them too, am tempted to get it and relive my childhood!

As to the plane, I would not buy this version, it is well carved, but no detail, I am going to ask TG and see if I can have one made with canopy and inside.

As to figures, I am sure the licensing issue will kill that, but I think it would be fun. Deagostini did Star Wars, I have all of them in metal, would be cool if someone ever did Indy!~
