Vietnam Ontos (1 Viewer)

It is/was at Aberdeen Proving Grnds in the late 90's.

Before I saw the one at the Marine Museum last year, I hadn't seen one since 1967. A truly unique and highly effective weapon for its purposes. You could say you have 6 tanks, or the best infantry support vehicle ever made if you needed one at the moment............Stryker

It was also called the mechanized shotgun. 6 beehive round belching rifles with four 50 cal mg. w/3-man crew. You are right - rapid fire, run for cover, reload - then back into action. Each beehive round had 100 darts that could penetrate and clear 1/4 mile of jungle - modern day canister shot. Always fascinated by it - NVA feared it, USMC grunts loved it.

Mike/Bill: have you guys visited the new museum at Quantico yet? If not, you should definately go--nothing like it in the world!!!.................Stryker

My JH father -in-law just went and I couldn't get him to stop talking long enough to ask if he went to any Army museums:rolleyes:;) It is , as described by the Man, most impressive.

Yes wonderful photos from the museum! Thanks for sharing!

1) I certainly need to see that new museum at Quantico. All the photos and descriptions are very positive!

2) There is another Ontos in good condition, it's at the Patton Museum at Ft. Knox, KY. It is looked after by a former Ontos crewman, Don Moriarity. On another armor fans board his call sign is "Dontos". I believe that one is a runner.

3) Back in the early 60's the Renwal model company made a 1/32nd scale Ontos. Not the greatest model, but the only one in plastic that I am aware of. They were re-molded under the Revell name also (Revell bought a bunch of the old Renwal tooling).

Gary: yes you definately have to visit the museum, it is breathtaking, and puts you in at least three (you are there scenerios) Iwo Jima landing--coming out of an amtrack on the beach, In Korea--temperature controlled large room, where you are the guarding force at Toktong Pass during the Chosin Resovoir action, and in Vietnam at Khe Sanh base--where you "land" and come out of a CH-46 helo on the flightline in a hot LZ. These and literally hundreds of other displays will keep you busy all day long!

I had that model as a kid, still have it on my shelf. It wasn't very good, and I wish someone would do a much needed up-dated one.............Stryker

Me too. The tubes came off after the first hot engagement. Then the whole thing succumbed to hostile BB fire:(
It was cool, because the whole Ontos concept was/IS  Of course, I still maintain that mounting six 40mm GLs would be fairly entertaining!

Mike: I had so much trouble trying to build the model as issued, that I thre ALL the kit supplied barrels away, cut off the breech ends and scopes, and used metal dowel tubing. It looks alot better, but would like to have Dragon or Tamiya or Collectors, or K & C do a new one!!.............Stryker
