Vikings returning from a raid. (1 Viewer)

Wow,you are very brave to take this on.Good luck and I look forward to seeing the finished product.

It's not going to be any Rembrandt Tony. As long as it's in the shape of a viking ship, I will be happy. I've got to make some variations on the design to make it more to scale with the figures but I think it will work out okay. See you on Saturday. Regards Greg.

I've been quite busy with other dioramas lately and haven't done much on this project but I managed to do a bit more to the hull. Also was able to pour the water. At this rate I think it will take another couple of weeks to finish. Regards Greg.

Brave man Gregg !{sm3} But think how great it'll look and how satisfied you'll be when it's completed. :salute::

Failing that'll it'll make a great Viking funeral ship ! :wink2:

Steve

Don't worry I've worked out many ways how to cover my mistakes Steve. I got the kit for about 65 dollars US, the price of one toy soldier and I reckon it's worth the effort. By the way there was some excellent Roman dioramas at the dinner night. I'll think about doing one of them in the display section next year. Might be easier to win a prize there than the very competitive diorama class. One area where there will be a lot of entries next time will be the Vietnam series. Had a look at the Aussies and they look great. Regards Greg.

It looks very good Mirof but it looks expensive as well. Doesn't say how long it is. The one I'm making fits into my diorama after modifications. Nice to hear from you Regards Greg.

It's written on top
Viking Longship 54mm 1/30

399€ including the 17 figurines when today a standard price for an unpainted fig in kit is c 20€ ( resin)
But I understand the do it yourself pleasure

Best

Yes that is the scale not the length of the model. I would think it would be 400 to 500mm long. Too large for my scene. The cost would be about 650 Aus dollars. With postage it would make the cost about 750 Aus dollars compared to about 80 dollars with postage included that I paid. So you can see I did all right. Would I recommend doing it yourself ? No unless you were a skilled modeller with a lot of patience. Regards Greg.

Latest photos of it starting to come together. Still some touching up to do and more rigging on ship. Sapper

Well done on your Viking ship. If I'd have tried, it would ended up at the bottom of a Fjord very early on !

Interesting scene you are putting together Greg.

Steve

Greg...

I think you did a fantastic job on the entire diorama...

the water...the dock...the building...and especially the Viking ship...

I have researched Viking Ship kits and am having trouble finding one in good scale for 54-60mm figures...

would you share the link from which you ordered yours...

I like modeling and would like to give it a look...

thanks...

Thanks Steve and Mike for your comments. As they say " a labour of love" and that's what building the ship turned out to be. I've said that I would not recommend building that particular brand of ship again but I ended up with a fundamental piece if your into viking scenes. The cost of the kit was around 70 dollars US and free shipping from China. The kit was laser cut in wood and was difficult to remove at times without breaking the parts. The most difficult part was the hull with thin strips of wood bent and glued to the frame. I improvised on many occasions and did things my own way as the instructions were in a foreign language. The scale was 1/50 which is about half way between 1/32 54mm and 1/72. So it does not look too bad against 54mm figures but i had to make the shields larger. The length of the ship was just over 400mm long, where i had to modify my scene to fit it in. If you have seen my other Viking ships, they are 24 inches long and more to 54mm scale but i still had to make the shields bigger. If you want to view the site on ebay just look up toys and hobbies, models and kits, wooden ships, viking . They have a variety of ships there at the moment. I'm still touching mine up at the present time and should be posting my final photos next weekend. Regards Greg. PS. Photo of both ships for comparison.

that's the problem...
most of them are 1/50 scale...
I like working with wood and have some success with it...
but the scale is still important to me...

I found one I liked a few weeks...
but have not done anything on it yet...

I need to call them and get an idea of the scale...

I bought an Egyptian barge with Cleopatra and a other figures on it from them years ago...
the scale was pretty good on it...
and it was very nice...
but I have no idea on their Viking Ship...

Dimensions: 9"Wx13.5"Dx11.5"H
does anyone have any first hand knowledge of his piece...
it's made by Toscano...

thank you very much for the detailed info...

Nice looking ship Mike, If it's 13-14 inches i would think it would be between 1-50 and 1-72 scale. The one i built was about 16 inches long and it was supposed to be 1-50 scale. My larger ships are 24 inches long and closer to 1-32 scale. As i said i would not recommend that brand but i notice one called Amati brand, maybe the Chinese ones are a copy of that. This one had no brand and all in Chinese. Regards Greg.

Greg...
here are some better pictures of it...
it's not a kit...
there is nothing to assemble...
it's a model...
under $85...shipping included...
even Walmart sells it online...

I also enclosed a pic of the Egyptian barge with Cleopatra and 3 Egyptians...
I owned this model made by the same company...
the Egyptians were about 1/4" taller than K&C's Egyptians...a very close match...

maybe the Viking ship is the same scale...

I may order one and if it doesn't work scale wise...I'll just return it...I'll let you know...

Hi Guys,
I just returned from the 'Land Down Under' early this morning and discovered all of these great posts and this terrific 'thread'!

Well done Greg (Sapper) on your 'Viking' dio and ship-building skills...I love displays and dioramas that incorporate boats and ships and water features of all descriptions...Remember that 'Dunkirk' dio that Gordon produced last year..?

During my very recent Aussie Trip it was exciting to see so many wonderful dios that included 'water work' ...just like what has been shown here.

Keep up the exceptional work and please keep sharing it with all of us fellow enthusiasts!
All the best and happy collecting,
Andy.
P.S. Also...Very happy you could join us Greg for dinner on the Sunday night after the 'Brisbane Event'...
Another fun gathering!

Nice to hear from you Andy, and i'm glad you made it home safely from your trip to Oz. I look forward to any new ideas you might have picked up while "Down Under" and we will see you again next time. Regards Greg. PS. We will have to make you a honorary citizen for the time you have spent here over the years.

Considering the difficulties you had(language, wood etc) I think your ship turned out rather well.Great scene.

Just about finished still a bit of tidying up to do. Sapper.
