Dear computer types..for 2 years, I have been using Norton Anti-virus. I find it to be less than as promised. It tends to paraylize my computer at startup, as it does its checking and it does not cleanup spyware, cookies, etc.,as promised. I end up using a freeware program to clean that up...What are the rest of you using as a complete anti-virus program?....Michael

Michael,
Norton is not the best out there as you've found out. You can get the full AVG suite with a 60-day trial. I'm using it at the moment. It's very user-friendly and it picked up several Trojans and other Malware on my work laptop that my company's anti-virus software missed.
Try this link;

Michael,

I have been using Norton AV for a number of years and haven't had any of the problems that you have had. I assume it must be down to the version that is used. I also use Ad-Aware in conjuction with Norton.

You mite want to look at Avast ( www.avast.com ). I have found it work better than Norton, McAfee & PcCillian and its free.
Getting Norton off of your computer can be a pain, it leaves footprints everywhere. I've been fooling around with PCs for years (my 1983 Apple IIe still runs) and find that no anti-virus lives up to its ads.
I find Avast the best I've ever used. I to use another program to clean up other trash.
If you need help call me. My 14 year old grandson can fix a computer in his sleep, he has passed me up.:(
Good Luck

I'll also heartily recommend AVG, especially for older machines (I still run Windows 98 on my desktop). I have Norton on my laptop, but on my desktop Norton absolutely refused to connect to the update server after a few years so I junked it. I then tried Panda anti-virus and it was even worse - it interfered with my games as well as my computer shutting down properly. I then switched to AVG and while its menu system is kind of primitive/unintuitive, it works flawlessly. You just install it and never worry about it again. You can buy a two-year subscription for a good price. As for spyware, every once in a while I run Lavasoft Ad-Aware. A trojan crippled my desktop once, so take it from me you can never be too protected. I wouldn't be surprised if the anti-virus companies themselves are involved in distributing viruses to keep themselves in business...

Microsoft invented computer viruses - no doubt about it. That's what some guy in the pub told me anyway.

I was talking to a techie guy on Saturday and he didn't think Adaware was that good anymore. He was recommending Windows Defender.

The problem is that there is no one fix all program. I sometimes use 4 or 5 anti-spyware programs to clean a computer.

Our technicians at work recommend more than one program also.

It's a shame that people really have nothing better to do that to cause havoc to other people.
