Does anyone know whether toy soldiers were ever released depicting Vlad, Wallachians, Ottomans and/or other 15th century forces he or his army may have faced?

The closest I've been able to find are St. Petersburg/Aeroart's Jannisaries and Holy Roman Empire figures, but nothing from Wallachia, Transylvania, Hungary, Serbia etc.

Also...can anyone recommend visual references for any of the aforementioned forces? It's for a comic I'm writing, I'd like to give the artist as historically accurate material as possible.

Thanks in advance,

Mark

I have requested a range from this period for a couple of years now.Matt at FL thought is was an interesting period so one can only hope.I had a historical Warhammer book once and it had a lot of pictures and drawings, also had pictures of 28mm figures representing the armies of the time.Old Glory has a 28mm range.

The only person I know that's into this period is Bob Black (ex editor of Toy Soldier and Model Figure magazine) I believe he has written various articles for wargames magazines. So if there are any wargamers on here they may help. Failing that Osprey publishing have a few books on the Ottermans and others.

The book I was referring to is at Hobby Bunker under the section Warhammer Histirical Wargamer.

Hi,

There are some 15th Century type Turkish troops out there that have been done by various Russian makers from St. Petersberg. Also Frontline did some Turks for their line they did of Winged Polish Hussars from the Seige of Vienna. Lastly Medallion Miniatures did and amazing mounted figure of Vlad with a standard. He is an amazing figure and is one I wish I owned but I dont think he is still in production they only make a 100 to 150 of each figure I believe, but I could be off on the numbers so you would need to ask Pat Wade. He would know.

Hope this info is helpful

Hi Mark,

I own one of the Medallion Miniatures figures of Vlad. Dave is correct, the figure is limited to 100 numbered pieces. Once the 100 are sold, the molds are broken and no more are made.

I am friends with the owners of Medallion Miniatures and I know the extent of the research they do before designing and sculpting their figures. They travel world wide to gather information which includes studying the history of the proposed figures, studying statues, photographing details of paintings, statues, and other pertinent materials, etc. From my perspective, Medallion Miniatures produce some of the most detailed and accurate figures presently available.

I know trooper provided you with the link to the Medallion Miniatures website where an excellent photo of Vlad resides. However, I thought you might like to see photos of my copy of Vlad. My photos provide some additional views of the figure that are not found on the Medallion Miniatures website. I will place a few more photos of the figure on a second frame which will follow this one.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :smile2:

Wow...thanks everyone.

Pat - that's a beautiful figure. I really appreciate the pictures, I think they do a better job of selling the figure than the ones on the Medallion website. I'm going to be sending my artist a link to this page for reference.

Thanks everyone else for the Warhammer recommendation. I have the Osprey books, but WH is something I wouldn't have thought of on my own. I ordered a copy from HB and I'll let you know how helpful it is when I get it.

Searching for Old Glory online, I came across this:

Yes, there's a whole host of period pieces, and the above links to historical figures. Not expensive (well, relative to what I'm paying for 1:30 and 1:32:), although I don't have any experience painting miniatures. Are there people that would paint them? Where would I find them, and what would I expect in terms of cost.

I really hope someone does produce larger scale figures. I think there would definitely be a market for them.

In the meantime, here's sneak peak of the comic:

Bear in mind it's a work in progress. If you scroll down past the written pitch there's great art (not done by me).

The story is a prequel of sorts to Bram Stoker's Dracula, and answers the question how did Vlad the Impaler become the fictional vampire in Dracula? That was something only glossed over in the last film adaptation.

Yes, I'm aware that there's an argument that Vlad was NOT the basis for Stoker's vampire, but it's among a number of historical licenses we're already taking. It's a mix of historical fiction and horror fantasy. I think the more real we get the historical parts, the more believable the fantastical details will be.

Although I'm posting it on a public forum, and it's a webcomic that we plan on offering for free, I ask that you not distribute the link, mostly so that we can present it to the larger public in a more polished form.

Thanks again, this was a tremendous help.

Best,

Mark

If you google miniatures you can come up with some painters but it can get expensive. It also depends on the level of painting you want. Here's one www.pictorsstudio.com

Hi Mark,

Interestingly enough I just finished reading the original Dracula by Stoker it was a fun read and surprisingly the Copola Movie was pretty close to the actual story line, with a few liberties like the Mina being his old love etc but still pretty close. I like the ideas you have put together so far and will look forward to its publication. Keep us posted on when this might occur.

I meant to say it get expensive if you get a lot of figures. Also there's guys on this forum who paint the smaller sizes who might be interested.
