Is anyone having any delays in receiving purchases due to the volcano? Looks like it may ease up a bit tomorrow. Luckily I received all my eBay purchases prior.:) On the U.S. News last night it said that UK Royal Mail has been trucking US bound Royal Mail to Spain to go by Air from there.

The Mail is not being seen as a priority over here right now, about one hundred and fifty thousand Brits are trapped abroad and now the Royal Navy is being used to bring them home, looks like Spain will be a hub for this modern day Dunkirk:);)

Wow that would be a heck of a way to end a holiday! I can see that conversation with my wife...Sorry Honey our flight is cancelled but we can have a seat with the Royal Navy. Kids will love seeing the 5" guns:D

Amazing how much mother nature can mess with things isnt it. But my friends keep the faith as this too shall pass.

Yep, awaiting some figures from the U.S., expected them last week but no show yet.

British Airways flew a pathfinder Boeing 747 late last night (no passengers hasten to add) near the ash cloud above 35,000 feet. The aeroplane went through an extensive post-flight engine and airframe check at Cardiff without incident. Unlike the Finnish Airforce F-18 who got a bit too close and suffered engine trouble.

The Met office have been using a Dornier DO 228 to monitor the ash formation, the aircraft and crews giving sterling service; and it appears a window of opportunity may appear over western Scotland tonight at 2300Z. Lets hope it sorts it self-out and clears for the rest of the UK and Europe before the problem really bites.

For people travelling...or not, here is the latest for the UK based on the latest Met Office information:

Part of Scottish airspace including Aberdeen, Inverness and Edinburgh airports will continue to be available from 1300-1900 today, and also south to Newcastle Airport. Restrictions will remain in place over the rest of UK airspace below 20,000ft.

Overnight the CAA, in line with new guidance from the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) decided flights above the ash cloud will be permitted in the UK; between 1300-1900 this will enable aircraft movements above 20,000ft in UK airspace.

NATS will continue to monitor Met Office information and the situation is likely to change overnight. NATS will make a further statement at approximately 1500 (UK time) today, Tuesday 20 April.

Hi Evzone,

I take this to mean that there are no flights in/out of Heathrow and Gatwick.

Raymond.:(

I'm afraid so Raymond. As soon as I get an update I'll post, but for now the restriction applies to all London Airports.

Portugal's airports and airspace are open, we're southerners:D.

Thanks, Evzone,

I just can't recall a previous volcanic eruption anywhere in the world that has caused so much disruption.

Well certainly not in Europe. Out in the Far East and SE Asia perhaps, but aircraft there fly around the problem. Dense airspace in Northern Europe doesn't allow that option.

UPDATED 1515 20.04.10: Based on the latest Met Office information, part of Scottish and Northern Irish airspace including Aberdeen, Inverness and Edinburgh airports will continue to be available from 1900 today to 0100 tomorrow, Wednesday 21 April, and also south to Newcastle Airport. Glasgow and Teesside airports will additionally become available in this time period. Restrictions will remain in place over the rest of UK airspace below 20,000ft.

Flights above the ash cloud are now permitted in the UK; between 1900 today and 0100 tomorrow, this will enable aircraft movements above 20,000ft in UK airspace

I've been stuck for six days and counting in Moscow. Hopefully getting out on Weds. Otherwise will be wearing my swim trunks as the last of my clean cloths. :D

My friend is stuck in Georgia waiting to get back home to the UK. She told me they are looking at the 1st May  Thankfully she is staying with her folks.

Rob,

Doesn't travel insurance cover this exigency ?

Raymond.:)

Hi Raymond,

It appears not,its being called an act of God and so passengers are not covered, thousands of people are stuck across the world with huge bills and difficulty getting home.Imagine thinking and budgeting for a five hundred pound holiday to find you are paying out thousands to get home!.Hopefully will start to sort itself out quickly now planes are flying again.

Rob

Once the travel delays are behind us, we will need to start thinking about the health effects.
