Westerns/War films you'd like remade (1 Viewer)

That would make a tremendous movie. Maybe someone can adapt "The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors", an outstanding book on the action, written by James Hornfischer. If any of you out there are WW2 US Navy fans, you need to read this book. -- Al

I second that, Al, that would make a great movie.

There was an episode of one of the series on the History Channel that gave an overview of the action, and even in a 60-minute show, it's a great story of courage and self-sacrifice.

Prost!

I like to see a new Midway and Last stand of the tin can sailors also. I would also like a new movie about the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War. J

I would like to see a remake of The Searchers.Even though I think this may be John Wayne's finest movie I read somewhere that this was a true story but that the people were black.I would like to see this remade with maybe Denzel Washington and Jamie Foxx in the title roles.

Medal of Honor Citation, Captain Ernst E Evans, USS Johnston

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as commanding officer of the U.S.S. Johnston in action against major units of the enemy Japanese fleet during the battle off Samar on 25 October 1944. The first to lay a smokescreen and to open fire as an enemy task force, vastly superior in number, firepower and armor, rapidly approached. Comdr. Evans gallantly diverted the powerful blasts of hostile guns from the lightly armed and armored carriers under his protection, launching the first torpedo attack when the Johnston came under straddling Japanese shellfire. Undaunted by damage sustained under the terrific volume of fire, he unhesitatingly joined others of his group to provide fire support during subsequent torpedo attacks against the Japanese and, outshooting and outmaneuvering the enemy as he consistently interposed his vessel between the hostile fleet units and our carriers despite the crippling loss of engine power and communications with steering aft, shifted command to the fantail, shouted steering orders through an open hatch to men turning the rudder by hand and battled furiously until the Johnston, burning and shuddering from a mortal blow, lay dead in the water after 3 hours of fierce combat. Seriously wounded early in the engagement, Comdr. Evans, by his indomitable courage and brilliant professional skill, aided materially in turning back the enemy during a critical phase of the action. His valiant fighting spirit throughout this historic battle will venture as an inspiration to all who served with him.

Agreed, this would make a good movie and with CGI of today, the special effects of the naval engagement would be outstanding!

I like to see Steven Spielberg remake the Longest Day, now I think that would be good to see.

I would like to see a remake of any of the movies dealing with WW1 aircraft - forget the CGI - film the aircraft in the air rather than (someone help me here with the name - was it Flyboys?) which was pretty ordinary. I would go so far as to suggest a Biggles movie minus the time travelling theme from the awful, awful 80s flick. It must rank as one of the worst movies of all time.

I would like to see a remake of The Patriot. Once it was done I would help organise the burning of all copies of the Gibson movie and the spreading of salt on the ground whereever it was filmed.

Have to agree about the WW1 airwar movie. Would love to see a good one done. The real stories behind many of the aces are so incredible that Hollywood wouldn't even have to do their usual fictitious embellishing. I think that even a biographical work on an individual could be very interesting within the framework of the airwar. Pick an ace and do his story. Flyboys, while at least an attempt, was not a very good movie, rife with historical inaccuracies and such bad writing as to be almost comedic in spots. Like I said, the real stories are exciting enough. And please, no phoney-balony trumped up love stories. Good war movies don't need them. Now, I see Russell Crowe as an excellent Mannock or Lufbery... -- Al

Well staying with the air theme but in a following conflict I'd very much like to see '12 O'clock High' remade. I've just watched this film again for the first time in years and forgotten what a good film it is. Good acting all round and I must say despite having watched hundreds of War films in my time I was still very much moved by the real footage of the air battles. When you sit there and watch these planes going down or exploding in mid air and think of the people in those aircraft, be they American or German it really is poignant and very sad. These bomber crews were real heroes and fought almost to the end of their endurance they have my deepest respect and gratitude. Its for the above reasons I think this deserves a remake , I leave it to my American friends to choose replacements for Gregory Peck and Dean Jagger.:smile2:

Louis, if you are reading this I know you lost a relative during the bombing of Germany, as I say above please accept my deepest respect and gratitude for what he did for our freedom.

Ideally I would not like to see any war movies remade. My only wish is that they were made right in the first place. That said, there are some real shockers out there and one of the worst that immediately springs to mind is Passchendaele. How dare they title their film with this name.

That scene in Passchendaele where the guy is struggling through no mans land with the symbolic crucifix on his back has to be one of the worst ive ever seen, makes The Battle Of the Bulge look like a classic.

I think I spat out my crudités at that point.
