Westerns,Westerns,and more Westerns (1 Viewer)

People will say what they want to about Kevin Costner, but the man has made some great westerns. He hasn't made a bad one, IMO, with only Wyatt Earp being a little long. Open Range is his best, but Silverado and Dances With Wolves are great shows, as well. I like his baseball movies, too.:wink2:^&grin -- Al

How about a show of hands for Major Dundee with Charlie Heston and Rich Harris. The greatest cast of character actors ever assembled, non stop action, battles against the Rebs, Mexicans, Frenchies, Apaches, and each other. My favorite all time cavalry movie, great score, plot and pretty girls. Michael

Can't go wrong with that one Michael.

Saw it in the theaters on release and have always liked it. Have also seen the 'restored' version and I quite like it as well. The restored version has a different score (much less distinctive) but the extra footage is worth it. -- Al

Yes from me - for Major Dundee - but how about the Grand-daddy of them all in my humble opinion;

"Stagecoach" with the Duke in the role that made him - and - of course - all of those wonderful Injuns chasing them.

They don't write 'em like that anymore.

P.S keep a lookout in Painting section next Spring - when I am going to try to re-create that scene.........^&grin johnnybach

Now, I am a HUGE John Wayne fan. IMO nobody was the west like JW. However, I also really like Randolph Scott as well. Any other fans of Scott on here? His films like 'The Tall T', which I just love, and his late film done by Peckinpah, 'Ride the High Country', I believe are very underrated. Thoughts? -- Al

I forgot about Ride the High Country..Another classic among classics..Who can forget the final scene with the stoically dying Joel McCrea looking up at his last sunset..Another old Joel McCrae favorite, Buffalo Bill..Check out the cavalry stand in the timber........Michael

There are alot of actors I like in westerns.Gregory Peck,Alan Ladd,Glenn Ford,Burt Lancaster,The big Irish sargent in JW's movies,Walter Brennen,Errol Flynn (I did like him in swashbucklers better)even James Cagney (he made a better gangster than a cowboy,same with Bogart:D).The list goes on and on.

Hi Mark. The big Irish sergeant was Victor McLaglen. He was a remarkable individual. He won the best actor Oscar in 1935 for 'The Informer'. He was also a good boxer who once fought Jack Johnson and was named heavyweight champion of the British Army in 1918. His military career also included a stint as Provost Marshal for the city of Baghdad. He had a real interesting life and career in the movies. -- Al

How about Robert Redford in Jeremiah Johnson? And the TV series Centenial which had a large section on the mountain men. Trooper

If, whilst riding a bike - I sing "Raindrops keep falling on my head............."

What gorgeous film does that remind you of?
