What age is appropriate? (1 Viewer)

I'm 15 now, but started really collecting when I was about 13. I had to have all the Fov vehicles but the K&C figures were like a fantasy land that I would never get to. I just received my first set a few months ago. I wish I had more but the salary of a fifteen year old doesn't really match the K&C figures!:D

Neither does the salary of a 43 year old!.I could spend thousands at a time if i had the money,it all comes down to choosing the stuff you really want. And its not easy, but at the same time its all part of the fun of it.It makes you really appreciate the stuff you do buy.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their kind comments and suggestions on this question and also give you all an update. Both Fathers thought it was a great idea to start with some nice plastic soldiers and see how their children did. Both are having a ball playing army with them setting up battles and knocking them over.

Both children have seen my collection now and one has asked his father for some metal soldiers. He understands they are for display only and not to play army with like the plastic ones. He now has a couple of K&C Africa Korp sets on display in his room. He also has the new motorcycle combo which is completely unfair since I do not have it. I keep telling his Dad he owes me but he just laughs. The other child it more happy sticking to the plastics that he can knock down and play with. Everyone is happy. The children are 8 and 9 and it is the eight year old who owns the K&C sets.

The morel of the story is I would recommend no younger then eight and then it would be up to the individual child.

By the way thank you all for brining up some old memories for me. While I was an adult when I started collecting metal toy soldiers as a child it was plastic Airfix that I and my brothers spent all of our allowance on. Yes many proud armies were laid low on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Also of course some paid the ultimate price on Guy Fawkes day.

Thanks,
Old Guard

The Britains Deetail range are ideal for this. I still have all mine in a cupboard

When I was age twelve, I was collecting Corgi military diecast vehicles-especially the ones that shot the little plastic projectiles. At that age, even though we played with them, they were well taken care of including the original boxes ALL of which I still have-that being 28 years later at present. Perhaps, this little story will help you out as I see ages 12-14 as a solid starting point to clllect K&C or similar although I would also buy some plastics to play with!

I also had the Corgi and Dinky vehicles which fired the projectiles, as well as Firetrucks, buses, James Bond Vehicles, etc. I still have about 50 of them in their original boxes, held in trust for Alec when he hits about 10.

The best for me was the Marx Figures from SEARS - American Revolution (Blue-American and Red-British) and Civil War (Blue and Grey) - great stuff. :D
