With the release of the simply stunning Carabiniers and renewed promise of Cruirassiers I couldn't help but wonder what British line regiment might be in the works to oppose them at Waterloo. Personally I would like a unit that also fought in Spain but since all but three line regiments at Waterloo also fought in Spain that still leaves many options. For me a Fuentes de Onoro unit would be best which narrows the field quite a bit but almost as good would be a regiment with similar facing colors and lace.

That is pretty simple for the Highlanders since the 92nd was prominent in both. For the other British line regiments, yellow, red or green facings would be the best, which would fit many Waterloo line regiments, including the 28th, 30th, 33rd, 51st and 69th. Anyone have any favorites or other thoughts on this?

I would think that the 28th Rgmt. would fit your purposes the best since they were still wearing the old style ''stovepipe'' shako at Waterloo as they did in Spain. I believe all the other line and Guard regiments ( besides Highland ) were wearing the new ''Belgic" style shako at Waterloo.

Good question Bill. I wish I had a precise answer, however, I am torn between a couple of different things. On one hand, I would be very happy to see some Highlanders, since the paint quality of First Legion is so high. Then, I think it might be better to have a unit that would have served in Spain. That way, certain enthusiats of the Peninsular War would have the opportunity to display specific battles there.:) Finally, on a selfish note, I would like to see either a light or battalion company of the Guards. As we have we talked about in previous threads, you could then display the Grenadiers as one face of the square, with the light or battalion company as another face.

I realize this wasn't very helpful, but I am so excited about First Legion that I see so many opportunities with any of these options. Or I'm just indecisive.

The 28th would be a good regiment to represent. My personal choice would be the 33rd. It was Wellington's regiment for a very short time. It was the regiment of the fictional Richard Sharpe in India. (Which along with the Duelists, Got me on this Napoleonic trip.)
Any Line regiment would be great. We have enough Guards for a while.

If we had the 95th in the sandpit at Waterloo my first choice, then we should have the 32nd regiment of foot ( Cornwall ) in square behind as my second.:D

Cheers Bellerophon :)

69th REGIMENT OF FOOT (THE SOUTH LINCOLN REGIMENT) - lovely green facings! ;)

Ah gratifying to have so many interesting replies. Here's a few thoughts on the responses.

I am assuming of course that the 95th is a given so I didn't bother to mention them for this purpose.

For Highlanders, either the 92nd (yellow) or 71st (buff) would be great for both purposes. I have no doubt we will ultimately see a FL Highlander series.

The 28th would have the right shako for much of the Peninsula period (at least before 1812) but I am pretty resigned to using the belgic version since it may be a long time to have British units specific to the Peninsula. For example, I am sure we will get the Guard Dragoons with roman helmets, which I prefer actually and which would be fine for 1812 forward as well. I am prepared to yield to "artistic license" for the early battles.

A Light Company for the Guards would of course be nice but I think we need a line regiment first. Besides, the existing Guards would easily be repainted for a light company.

The 32nd would actually be fine for the Peninsula and pretty good for Fuentes, since although not participating in that battle, the 43rd (with the same white facings and square/pair lace) won a battle honor there. The 43rd was a light regiment however. The 33rd officer lace was gold versus silver for the 43rd but that wouldn't bother me much.

92nd please.

I would vote for the 92nd, Gordon's also. Although I don't think that the 79th has been done very often if at all.
