I have been looking and buying some off of eBay and the adds on this forums. The only problem is there is not enough of them listed. Seems like 90% of the auctions on eBay are new and at full retail :(

I agree with most if they are in good shape then I am fine with them :)

As long as it's undamaged and in the box, I don't differentiate between used or new, and I buy whatever is cheaper. If it's are rare retired item, well I don't honk there's another way to get it. If it is broken or without a box, I will happly buy it at an accordingly reduced price, and then convert it, fix it, or just use it as a filler. I also prefer to buy from those I know, either in person or from here. So if anyone has some Napoleonic 54mm Matt broken pieces at a good price......

P.S. I just bought a used set- it's called Vuardsmen at the Bar. Will post pics when I get back. Got it for a good price too! Only 4 more WBriatin Christmas sets to go- the highlanders one, the base for the three, Nightengale, and Natal. PM me if ya got any of 'em.

I really like the older sets and first releases of soldiers, many times more that the "New and Improved" figures. For example, the K&C older Fusiliers (BR01 - BR13 and such) are more appealing (IMO) than the newer, albeit more defined, Fusiliers figures (BR75 – BR82). As was mentioned earlier on this thread, the hunt is part of the fun and that is generally in search of that extra guy who is loading his musket or kneeling firing or maybe a needed flag bearer you need to complete a scene or make a grouping. Out of probably 500 – 550 purchases I have made from eBay, at TS shows and the here on the TF forum I have only been burned once so I will take those odds any day!

I prefer to buy castings above anything else - and paint them myself. Secondly, I love to find old soldiers - some - due to age - perhaps gone past their best. But then - I treat them like castings. Sometimes for repair - and then painting.

Some that I find - often by chance - are too old and (possibly) valuable to just re-paint. Those I keep too - just to savour what they might have seen and been through in their lifetime.

In short - I prefer Old Toy Soldiers (who, often like the real thing) are far more interesting than brand-new.

I bought up every horrible old britains i could find in the past,,always enjoyable to look at the trays of them in spite of my restoration efforts being totally a shadow of what they once were,,my light brigade diorama is composed completley of restored hussars lancers etc,,so very satisfying

Before I started Yeomanry Miniatures I used to by old Britains Cavalry figures that were in astate of disrepair and restore them. I even used to recast them for my own amusement. Alas I don't have the time now.

Regards,
Brian.

I suppose a lot of us Brits will accept "Playworn" models, and I think it actually adds to the character. A bit of patina is good, and paint is lost because the Lead Soldier was played with, just as it was made to be.

I only really got into collecting Plastic toy soldiers this past March when my Grandson arrived I supposed I wanted to strat buying the same soldiers, Herald, Crescent, Timpo that I had 50 years ago when I was a kid as I enjoyed playing with them so much. However I cannot resist restoring them and creating boxes for them as I want them to look brand new for him when he is old enough to play with them.

Cheers
