I see 21 st Century have some 1:18 scale warbirds. Exactly how big is this scale. It must be bigger than 1:30. I am confused. Please could some-one put me out of my misery.

Damian 1/18 is quite a bit bigger , my boy has a 1/18 69 fastback mustang ,
It would be about 1 inch longer than the new desert tiger [not including barrel ] and only slightly less in width .So a 1/18 plane would be pretty large.

Well I am confused. The Michigan site has the 21 st Century planes listed as 1:18. On their electroinic newsletter it said 1:32. They are at about 80 USD which is quite a lot cheaper than anything else I have seen. They look very good. I am tempted but not sure. I do not feel like shelling out 700 USD for the K and C ones.
Anyway Ozz and Rob thanks for your replies

It looks like on 21 st centurys website they do both 1/18 and 1/32 ,
It seems pretty cheap for a plane that big ,but man would it take up
some space.

Before I became interested in toy soldiers, I had a 1:18 scale P 51, ME 109, Corsair, Stuka and P 38. They were huge and did take up enormous amounts of room. However, really great quality.

21st Century Toys does indeed offer both a 1/32 and a 1/18th scale line of aircraft.

At 1/18th, the aircraft are big. I have a couple of the P-47s, and (from memory-I'm sitting at work now) they're around 2 feet long, with a wingspan close to 3 feet, perhaps?

You need a lot of horizontal space to display them, or a lot of headroom and a sturdier system than thumbtacks and fishing line, to make a ceiling display. But they make impressive models. And if I had kids, I would get them those planes, as toys, to get them interested in history, and ultimately, the hobby.

The models can be bashed into decent-looking display models, too. I've seen guys who detail them, repaint them or just weather them.

Prost!

The 1:18th scale was first introduced by Kenner in the late 1970's with their Star Wars action figures. Since then, 1:18th scale is the scale for anything action figure related. Essentially, 4" true scale= 6'. I have two airplanes- the ME109 and some other thing my brother in law got me- I also have two 1:18th scale blackhawks and the Viet Nam Huey. I have some of these in my pictures on the dio threads.

They are much cheaper than the KC sets and they also cover a wide range of air history- I have seen Sabre's and MiG's. They also do Modern aircraft as well. I paid $30 for my ME109 back in 2001/2.

Forces of Valor does some stunning looking airplanes in 1:32nd scale as well. They go for $30-$40 a pop. Harry had a British FOV Plane in one of his threads as well. They do attack helicopters in 1:48th which are really nice and they also do some smaller scale, I think 1:24th or something which, you begin to lose a bit of the detail with.

Bottom line, I'd really really figure out what it is you want to display before committing here. With 21st/FOV, you can beat them up and not be out much-you can also contact an artist to do up a plane- wing numbers, squadron numbers, etc, and still pay far far less than a KC Warbird.

The Cons have been covered- they do take up a great deal of space, which is why I only have 2 planes and I may only ever pick up the P51 in the future. I have seen guys who hang them with string from their ceilings- with a bunch of planes, it looks kind of tacky- best bet is the fishing line. After awhile though, you got to dust them which can be a pain. Not sure if shelling out several hundred dollars on a curio for them is worth it either for plastic figures.

I,ve been collecting the 1-18th line since 21st Century came out with them in 2000.
As stated the planes are huge, but impressive.
I just can,t stop buying the 1-18th figures, they are poseable which means you are only restricted by how many you want to buy.
As the years have gone buy, same as K&C, the figures have really improved.
The figure line may continue but from info I,ve gathered I wouldn,t expect the planes for to much longer.

I think I will stick to FOV 1:32 scale planes. I have a FOV spitfire and it is great. A solid model and reasoanble size. If K and C ever do release some RAF aircrew etc it would go well with them
Thanks for all the advice

Damian, which FOV 1/32 Spit do you have and how do you rate the quality and attention to detail? I got a rather negative couple of impressions when I asked about these on another thread. I have a Corgi 1/32 Mk1a Brian Lane that I was thinking about complimenting but they never followed up with a Mk V or IX.
