Hey gang:

Just thinking about what historical movie/ mini series would you like to see make it to the big screen and/or a blockbuster mini series. For me

- no doubt the battle of Zama- some sweeping drama set with Hannibal and Scipio. Would be really neat as a mini-series as we are talking about really titanic figures in the ancient world.

- I would also like to see a historical epic movie on the first Islamic jihad against the Byzantine Empire. I think that would be really neat- not a lot done with Byzantium.

Anyone else have any flicks they'd 'like to see?

1. An LRDG / SAS in N. Africa film would be pretty cool. There were one or two of the old B&W's done, but this would have the potential to be a bit special.

2. An HBO type mini series (along the lines of BOB, Pacific and Gen Kill) covering the Falklands. Don't think it's been touched before.

3. An updated version of the historically correct Starship Troopers?

Falklands conflict would indeed be a welcome series

Would love to see a well done series on Verdun in 1916 or, if a shorter, more focused film, the fight for Ft. Vaux in June 1916. -- Al

Use some of that CGI that made Titanic and the battle scenes in LOTR so much fun and do some US Civil War naval battles. The Ironclads, 15 -20 years ago was made with models and sets with a horrible story. The naval war on the Mississippi has loads of great events and great characters, North and South. Too many US Civil War movies have stiff acting. Show some sweat, blood, and sex as well. Lt. Cushing's attack on the CSS Albemarle and his escape. There's a story!

I gotta admit that I would like to see a WW1 Verdun, Somme, etc film done but I was depressed enough coming out of Pvt Ryan. I cannot imagine watching 3 hours of carnage on the big screen what it would do to me emotionally. :(:(

I would like to see a updated version of Midway without love story. Also, a new color version of Battleground.

With current CGI abilities I would like to see some new or re-done naval combat movies. For the Nap fans, imagine a full Trafalagar with all the ships in action! I also think that a re-make of Midway. The 1970's movie caught only a bit of the real drama and threw in the love story and the tension between father and son. One of the few other remakes that I would like to see might be "Sink the Bismarck", again with full CGI support. The 1960 movie was actually quite good and generally followed the historical actions of the chase, but reduce the love tensions in the Admiralty. A mini-series about the naval battles around Guadalcanal would be very interesting (to me at least). The combat could well have gone either way and left the Marines isolated instead of victorious. Another movie could follow a citizen of the British Commonwealth in Malaya and for a climax place him on board Force Z on 10 December 1941.

Amen to that, brother! I was always disappointed by that movie, especially since it fell so far short, in terms of the special effects, of "Tora! Tora! Tora!", which was made only 4 or 5 years earlier. I can understand the use of footage of the post-modification Essexes for the carriers--after all, we can't raise the ships or rebuild the Enterprise, but to take the same image used for one of the American carriers and flip it for the Hiryu was just laughable. Same for the mismatched footage of American aircraft. At least much of the footage of the Japanese aircraft was borrowed from "Tora! Tora! Tora!".

And the love story was just stupid. The real story of men on both sides of the battle is heroic enough, I think, especially back then, when the vets were younger and we weren't as jaded and ignorant of the history as we've become.

And let the Japanese speak Japanese, with subtitles.

Still, the acting was pretty good. And Sensurround was pretty cool to us kids.

Prost!

Remake of Midway, done right, would be a winner. CGI would also make a film of Jutland possible. Love to see those battlecruisers going at each other. -- Al

Strangely enough - I would like to see a modern version of

"Stagecoach"

No big battle - scenes - no huge expenditure on "Battlewaggons"

Just one dog-soldier (John Wayne - wah-hah) against another - the Apache
with the support ( or otherwise) of the others.

War does not take place in a vacuum. It actually heightens the emotions ( yes - even those too) - and I was heartened to know that even Hollywood had worked that out, long ago. Love survives even the worst of human frailleties!

After all of these years - it's still my favourite "War" film.(closely followed by "Good Morning Vietnam" and then "Apocolyps Now"). Even though many don't recognise Stagecoach as such: War film" it is.

Set in the deserts of the early fight for civilisation of the west in the emerging USA - it can't be faulted - and I just love it! Bring it up to date - please - and I'd love it the more.

Who would I cast - I have my thoughs - but how about yours??????
If you too agree - share them .............................

How many versions do you want? There was a remake done in 1966 and another in 1986. Neither one can hold a candle to John Ford's original and any more modern remake will suffer by comparison, as well. Without John Wayne, there is no point to further remakes.:wink2: -- Al

There was a movie with Spencer Tracy where he played Robert Rogers.I would like to see that remade, also El Cid.

Northwest Passage would be good but loooong as the Tracy movie was only half of the book. Any improvement on the weapons and uniforms of the Rangers from the original movie would help.

One of these days someone has to make a decent version of "Charge of the Light Brigade." I still haven't decided if the films are terrible or if it just isn't a good enough story.

As far as new concepts go, no one has ever addressed the 1795 conflict in the British taking of Cape Town by the 78th Highlanders, as the British attempted to secure Dutch colonies (Cape Town being of vital importance to the French route to India). Major-General Craig and the 78th with a small detachment of sailors and marines (but no artillery) marched from Simonstown to Cape Town to be confronted by 800 Dutch regulars and 2000 Dutch militia. Just as the Dutch were preparing to assault the British force, Major-General Alured Clarke, with the 84th, 95th, and 98th...as well as every spare man he could drag over from British base on St. Helena, arrived to reinforce Craig. The march to Cape Town demonstrated unorthodox guerilla tactics as the Dutch colonists surrounded the column, keeping up harrassing fire throughout the six mile march. Once the British deployed, however, the colonists withdrew and sued for peace. This event would mark the advent of British/Dutch hostilities in South Africa, which culminated in the Boer War a hundred years later. By establishing a British presence on the Cape, it also paved the way for the first world-class African rugby club (you could probably leave that out of the film).

I would like to see a biopic of Robert E. Lee, would make a great story with enough action to satisfy anyone. Trooper
