Looking over my collection/addiction, I notice that more and more of my recently purchased items are still in their original packing months after delivery. I have four small and two large glass enclosed cabinets for display..but those were filled years ago. There are so many 'must have' items on my inner list waiting for my budget clearance, that I fear they will wind up still in their shipped cartons. My wife suggested a solution to my problem, but that choice somehow ends with a blunt trauma to the back of my head. I was wondering how many of you out there have the same display vs. storage problem that I have? What percent of your collections remain, perhaps, never displayed? How many of you rotate your displays? How many of you have slowed your purchases because you might never find room for it on your battlefields? Do you still get pleasure from having an incredibly built model..knowing that it will remain on your shelf..taken out only when there is a call up in your reserves?

Hahahahaha

so very true- you are spot on!

Me too

solution - i built a second home

but starting to fill up that office too

time to take a tranquilizer and get more selective

thanks

A commonly asked question. There was a long thread on this topic several months ago in the General Toy Soldier Discussion section. Many of your questions are answered there - http://www.treefrogtreasures.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8476 http://www.treefrogtreasures.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17736

The point you raised is a common problem among collectors.

I have two large display cases I use in my office/ war room and 4 more medium cases throughout the house. This allows me to keep the items I am currently interested in on display where I can see them and the others in lesser used rooms. This way it is a pleasant surprise when I go into one of the other rooms. I try to display most items but unfortunately a small percentage does remain in the box.

The only ones that are not on display are castings waiting painting and some plastics. All of my painted figures are out there to see and enjoy..... I hate to have them boxed, they may die of lack of Oxygen and food and then what a waste that would be :)

P.S. time to goto IKEA for another cabinet too :)

About 80% of my collection is on display in 7 glass cases. I have reached the point where every new piece must displace an older piece. My first love was collecting AFVs but this gradually expanded into collecting figure sets and buildings for scenarios. In the future, I will be more tightly focused on AFVs and less on figure sets unless they go specifically with an AFV or have an especially good piece of equipment with them.

Having most things on display, it is much easier now to decide if a new piece is just nice or is one I really want and where it can make room for itself in the collection.

I have all my items on display now, this is mainly because I just hate the idea of buying something and leaving it in the box.And before Simon Brad or Terry says it,its not because I hear little voices from the box saying 'Let us out Rob,let us out'!:D;)

Also theres no fun in leaving it in the box,K&C stuff is designed to be seen, especially by the wife or close family who might want to buy you Christmas or Birthday presents;)

Simon - do something. Stage 1 is seeing things. Stage 2 is hearing things. And you know what comes next - STAGE 3!!:D:D

While I agree in principal that pieces should not just be in boxes, but should be displayed, I don't have enough room and it is very difficult to get rid of stuff. That is why I rotate pieces as new pieces come out and become the focal point of a shelf.

I operate a rotation system, sometimes I let the wife have a dining room and sometimes its an office extension;)

I solved this problem years ago. Very little in my collection is permanent! The story of how I acquired the piece, or who I got it from often is as important as the piece itself. Certain things like my Dinky collection or my Smith Miller collection are important because they were items of interest from my childhood. This is why I have no reservations about passing items to other collectors. As it is the wife refuses to enter my den:rolleyes: and jokes daily with our mailman as the next package arrives!

Unfortunatetly, I am one of the "guilty" ones. Over 90% of my stuff is still in boxes waiting for more display space. I do exercise some restraint in buying because of the lack of space. I have mental pictures and a few notes about scenes that I want to set up, but I still lack the places to put them. I need to buy fewer soldiers/tanks and save up for another nice glass display case. Until then it's a case of "boxes full of boxes" for the foreseable future.

If I can't display it I don't buy it.Simmo.

I agree with this theory and very little of what I have is in boxes. If it is, I'm probably selling it or selling something to make room for it.

I also agree with John (njja) about permanence. Let's not forget that you can't take it with you.

Watch me MUAHAHAHA :D

I keep 100% of my collection in the original box, undisplayed. I have a 5 year old and a 2 year old and they just love to get their hands on shiny little things.
