I have often wondered what wars and/or time periods are just missing- for whatever reason, no companies whatsoever have decided to approach certain time periods or themes.

Off the top of my head, I can think of two- Bannockburn 1314- Scottish War of Independence/ William Wallace Robert the Bruce era. I will admit I have seen some Russian or Spanish models of figures- I recall a 54mm version of Mel Gibson as Braveheart in a model but it wasn't really a toy soldier. I have some offshoot Dragon Mel Gibson 10" figure here at my house.

I gotta think, a table of Scottish Pictish warriors charging against the Plantagenets would just be SUPERB!!

The other one- the wars of the ancient Mayans and Aztecs. I think this line would be very very well done if handled in a fashion similar to the Ancient Egyptians by KC. A lot of great history there.

Be interested if anyone else has any "gaps" they'd like to see filled.

How about Afghanistan 1840 or The Opium Wars 1860? I might be a bit out on my dates here, but you know what I mean. Gandamack and Tanggu.

I have always wished warships would be made (54mm scale that you can set up and fight battles with).

Some I wish were made are:

Roman/Greek galley

Medieval Warship

Viking Ship

18th Cent. warships

I have always thought adding sea battles & land sea battles (I guess some large row boats are needed) would break the monotony and allow some new recreations.

I have often looked into the lego types & playmobil ones, but they are expensive and often have fake elements. My hope, was for small fleets, hence inexpensive versions, more like models perhaps. Emphasis on numerous gun ports, gangplanks for boarding (oh and ropes to swing in on), a corvus for the roman galley, etc

54mm scale warships? Okay if you can afford them and have the space to display them I suppose.

Cheers

Trophy used to make magnificent high quality 19th Century warships, complete with crew and passengers, including the Lion, a British Crimean War Era steam gunboat, the Eagle and the Leopard, Union and Confederate Civil War gunboats, the Victoria, a large Nile River steamer, a small Nile River gunboat, and an Egyptian Dow manned by Madhist forces. I know Conte makes ancient Roman and Viking warships. I agree that these warships add great display potential to toy soldier collections.

Conte makes a 1/32 scale (54mm scale) Roman galley, Medieval warship (cog), and Viking ship. They also make a neat pirate ship that can be used as an 18th century warship.:)

How about 2 American wars of the 19th century? The Mexican War and the Spanish American War.

These wars were done in plastic.
Barzo did a Mexican War playset. BMC did a Spanish American War playset, plus Armies in Plastic has done Rough Riders.
K&C also did a Rough Rider set.

I think the Russian Revolution and the Civil war were very important events and would make great toy soldiers. The above link is to a book on how the Reds almost invaded Poland at then end of the Russian Civil War in 1920. Dr Zhivago was a great movie. There would be lost of snow scenes and with the red communist flags that would provide a striking contrast. If you are looking for a forgotten war to model then that is it.

I'll just take this oportunity to register my vote of the Falklands. I know its being discussed recently, with all the pros and cons, but I'd hate to miss an opportunity. :)

Funny you should mention that- I was just going to post that as well.

Great minds think alike brother!!:D:D

Chris,

I mentioned it briefly when chatting with Andy at the evening do in London, and he didn't dismiss it out of hand, so, especially with his background, you never know...
Heres hoping.

HERE, HERE!!!

But NOT in plastic--in metal. And high quality, like, K&C quality.

Those sound great. Wow...a cog. Battle of Sluys anyone?

But I don't even look at those sites anymore. I can't afford Conte or KC, etc. Must be why I am a toy collector, and tend to go with new sets that you can get for $25.00 or less-ish.

But I had a different sort of ship in mind perhaps then what people are thinking. Imagine an improved MPC sort of piece. The main idea is to be designed to actually fit a lot of soldiers or guns, and be cheap enough to have fleets. The construction could be snap together, mainly 2 sides a deck, and then whatever accessories are needed, ie mast, oars. Make it solid color plastic, probably brown, and flat bottomed. They could break down and fit in a bin. Such things if well sculpted, and realistically colored, can look pretty good in masses.

But for me it's mainly still about play-worthiness. I like setting them up & letting son & friends knock them down. Hopefully Grandsons (or Granddaughters!...I tried teaching my sister & daughter, but it didn't take) will one day. Even my cherished Mtd Swoppet knights have to take the field & dodge catapult balls like everyone else. But I do teach them that when its over, nobody goes home until we find that tiny helmet visor that went flying.

When young I briefly became interested in the knights of Malta & the Battle of Lepanto. A sea battle, where hundreds of ships just all plowed into one another and fought basically many small land battles back and forth accross the mass of galleys.

Oh to have an Ottoman Turk Army....(please don't tell me about the nice Elastolin figures $$$$$$$$$$$ )

Britains and John Jenkins are starting new 1812 ranges. Previously, WM Hocker and Mulberry miniatures has done 1812.

Trojan War. It has everything and like the John Jenkins French Indian sets - I think collector interest would build as sets were released and collectors became educated about the personalities and battle. If the figures were limited to the same extent as JJ sets it could make a popular line. Sounds perfect for KC UK to consider. Are you out there Tony?
