As many of us played with plastic troops in our youth, I thought it would be fun to see what was your favorite playset/sack of sojurs? Mine would have to be the Marx "Battle of the Blue & Gray" set. I loved the redoubt that came with the set for the cannon and the troops were in some very cool poses. The one I remember the best is the Cavalry trooper on the falling horse. My favorite sack of sojurs would have to be the BMC Iwo Jima set based on K&Cs 1st run of Iwo Jima figures. I think K&Cs DD line would be cool if done a plastic playset. Some poses might not be possible to recreate in plastic but, I'm sure that there would be enough to do so.

My favorite playset was the BATTLE OF NAVARONE PLAYSET. I remember making a ton of sandbags for it out of clay.

I Think my favorite set as a kid would also have been the marx cival war but I had alot of favorites and they would change all the time. My set didn,t have the falling horse figure though. I also loved the marx alamo mexican that my dad gave me from when he was a kid and the marx french forgien legion soldiers he gave me but he only had a few left and just the figures only.As far as only being able to make only some figures in plastic if K&C were to make plastic figures thats not true. Anything that can be made in metal can be made in plastic (look at the conte plastics). The only problem is that they would have to be assembled and would cost more.

My favorite was Davy Crockett at the Alamo.
Remember wearing out the Sears catalog prior to Christmas looking at it.
However as I grew into my early teens and toy soldiers were for kids, I conned my younger brother into getting the Civil war and Battleground sets for Christmas.
Took them out when nobody was at home.
My favorite plastic of all time is the Conte WW2 sets, just the absolute best.

The "possible" part of reproduction was the issue of having to assemble some figures that couldn't be molded as a single piece. The need to keep cost down in plastic armymen is very high. That was my meaning.

Mine was Marx's "Desert Fox". Especially with the 88's with the camo nets.

Being from the otherside of the Atlantic,my favorite playset would have to be the Airfix Fort Sahara.Enjoyed many years of action with the set.:)

Would that be the 1/72 Fort Sahara? I too, like that set and had loads of fun oppressing indigenous populations (not to be taken seriously). I still have a set and have augmented the garrison with the ESCI FFL figs (the best I've seen in any scale).

Fort Apache and Battleground were two of my favorite Marx sets. I also like Barzo's Davy Crockett Fort set and Rogers Rangers sets. I have decided to get rid of my 1/72 figure sets-Revell- Esci- Italeri and my 1/35 Dragon figure kits along with Tamiya and other kits. Also Airfix Roman- Robin Hood and fort apache 1/72 sets along with Imex 1/72 Custer's Last Stand set. Sending list to hobby shop that wants my kits and magazines. No time in this life to finish them all. Just kept some 1/72 Napoleonic sets. It is overwhelming when you start boxing them up. Tired of wife complaining about all the room they take up. John

I had 5 Marx playsets when I was a kid, 1966 Christmas { I was 6} I got a Marx Miniature Knights and Vikings set which I loved, of course it didnt last, dont know what happened to it. Following years I got Fort Apache , another Fort Apache{!} Battleground and when I was 12 my older sister bought me a Heritage Blue and grey set.Toss up between Blue and Grey and the mini Knights set.
I painted the blue and grey, all of it.Later I think they fell victim to a Crossman 760 powermaster as by the time I was a teenager it was the pinnacle of being laim to have toy soldiers.

My Dad has some guys working on the place, replacing some beams under the house. Yesterday I was over at the old place and my 80 year old Dad came up to me out by the barn, handed me a mud caked Marx battleground halftrack the crew had found under the house.Hosed it off, its in perfect shape.I put it in the metal shop up on a shelf.Wonder what else is under there?
Maybe the rest of that set!

Atlantic Egyptians, Starlux Naps and anything Athena.

I also have a bunch of rubbery/vinlyly type of cowboy figures in my collection which are absolutely amazing.

As much as I like the old MArx stuff, I really like the older hard plastic Ideal and Renwal vehicles. I have some of the Ideal pieces but Renwals are htf and expensive when you do.

When I saw my first Marx WW2 US soldiers in about 1959-60 I was really hooked. They set a new standard of poses and detail over the Timmee, Peyton, etc that I had used before. I used to trade figures with my friend to get more "Marx men". In later years I got a "Battle of the Blue and Grey" playset one Christmas and that was my pride and joy for years. In later years, between getting jobs and discovering girls I bought myself a "Battleground Playset" at the old SS Kresge store.

Another series that really captured me were the MPC "ringhands". I had lots of soldiers, some spacemen, cowboys, Civil War/Rev.War, firemen, etc. I was able to mix or match figures with different equipment (the colors didn't bother me much). Between the ringhands and the Lincoln Logs (for forts and buildings) many happy hours were spent in my fantasy world.

My fav was my first playset, the Tom Corbet Space Academy (this really dates me). Loved the plastic space helmets and all the accessories. I thought the figs, though too small for 54mm, were great. Second best as a kid were the Marx Army Training Center sets. When Marx started producing real Germans and, later, Japanese for his new G.I.'s to fight, I was in 7th heaven. The Blue and Grey sets were terrific as well. I gotta say, however, that a lot of the new playsets are even more spectacular than the old stuff. Just got Ron Barzso's Fort Ti in the summer. Man, that is a nice piece. I enjoy custom making my own playsets by buying separate pieces and putting them together to make a playset I find exciting. I also custom build pieces, like my humongo bridge. I've been painting tons of adobe buildings from different manufacturers (Barzso, CTS, Hobby Bunker) to make an adobe walled village with a fort in one corner manned by AIP colonial troops opposing massess of Fuzzie Wuzzies. Timpo gattling guns will be a must.

I agree Winky, the new sets are very cool. I have the Conte Zulu set and it is really cool but, those foam buildings create some serious storage issues. The cost of the newer sets (at least Conte) get prohibitive for the less well heeled collector. I just wish I wasn't so old and fat so, I could take the Zulu set out in the yard and refight Rourke's Drift a few times. Laying in the dirt (where plastic soldiers should be played with) is less appealing to me now.

Winky, I like the sound of your Colonial game, especially the Gatling guns.Stack'em up for me.Are there enough Colonials for the Sudan around? Ansar cavalry, Camels, ect. What about The British CAmel Corps or Naval brigade, ect?Anything out there or do I have to convert?
The Conte Zulu sets are amazing, storage, yes can be rather difficult.I have most of them Stashed on top of my Gorilla racks or under the battle table.Have had it set up once.
My Favorite playset for new manufactures is probably Contes WW2 Sets although ZULU and 1066 Warlord are so very cool.;)
