The Huns might have been lucky - if they had invaded Ireland, they would have discovered that the Irish don't like any invader! A few million PO'd Irish would have made the Russian partisans look tame :)

I don't think it would have taken the German army that long to subdue little Ireland myself, mass murder and imprisonment would have been used as it had been everywhere else they went. This story shows that if allowing the uboats to use their ports was an attempt to stay on the right side of Hitler (don't know if thats fact or not)it didn't work, and ironic that although it was Britain that suffered from the uboats so much , Britains holding out and resisting invasion prevented Ireland from being occupied and no doubt purged of those the Germans thought unwanted.

Well it proves once again Hilter thought himself to clever by half only a fool would willingly have taken on the I.R.A....{sm5} anyway does anyone believe that the Germans could have actullay gotten past the full might of the Royal Navy in any fit state to press home a successfull invasion of the British Isles.

I don't think the SS , Gestapo and German army would have had had a huge problem with the IRA myself, having subjugated France I'm not sure Ireland would have been much of a problem for them. The diff between the Germans and British conflict with the IRA is that the Brits showed humanity where as your Germans would have erased whole towns and villages as in Russia and Poland, I don't think any struggle would have lasted five mins.

But Wayne I think you are spot on re the the Royal Navy and defeating Britain, I dint think it would have worked as among other things the Germans heart did not appear to be in it, one thing is for sure, if we'd fallen Ireland would not have lasted ten mins!

I don't think that having an invasion plan means that Germany would have invaded Ireland. They would have had to get an invasion fleet past the Royal Navy and RAF without air cover. They didn't even dare cross the Channel let alone go around England to Ireland.

I spoke to a Bomber Command navigator who swore blind that on leave in Ireland in civvies he sat next to the crew of a German ship. He also went to a dance which ended with a goodnight speech from the parish priest who warned the girls to be careful because there were Australians present.

Rob, my comment about the I.R.A was pure tongue in cheek, the Jerries would have been as ruthless as you say if they had got there which I doubt, you Brits would have keep them to occupied with a strong resistance for them to even try. All mute anyway as a invasion of Britain would have been a total failure as the full might of the Royal Navy with it's ginger up couldn't have been passed.

Any chance of an Irish "Fifth Column" with a later recruitment of an "S.S. Hibernia" division?
