Is there something about the Roman era that turns manufacturers away? It seems WWII, Naps and Zulu nation have locked down the market and won't give any breathing room for us Roman fans. I know there a few companies out there that would do an excellent job with this era. I'm a huge Imperial fan but heck at this point I'll take Republican as well. What gives? Are Romans not considered to be a money maker? Hard to produce? Not enough interest? I love Aeroarts figures but the prices are so high.

Conte has a new range coming against barbarians. They had a great first set come out but other sets long time coming out.

It's truly a sad state of affairs my friend. All that time and history yet pretty scant offerings. East of India put out a decent range but no barbarians for them to fight. Conte still offers some here and there. St. Pete too- expensive but you don't get bogged down with the retirement games.

Good question, because the Ancients are well-represented, in the connoisseur category.

For mass-production, I think, too, of the old Blue Box set of Romans, though, there too, there were no barbarians to fight them. Odd, too, because BB made matched sets from other periods (Waterloo British and French, Union and Confederates, WWII Allies and Germans).

Mignot had Romans, I'm pretty sure, and I think, Ancient Greeks, but I'm not sure about barbarians. Did they make Gauls, too?

Stadden had individual figures in the custom figure catalog.

Now, in small scale, Airfix had a very nice set of Romans, and a set of Britons, in HO. And Atlantic had Greeks, Trojans, Egyptians, too, if I remember correctly, and Romans, with a Colosseum, all in 1/72.

Prost!

I know Conte has this range coming out but the problem with Conte is that it takes forever.

I have almost every 1/72 scale plastic Roman set out there. Problem is I don't have the painting skills. I tried picking up the brush a couple times and needless to say it ended in disaster every time.

It's the usual problem I'm afraid, everbody wants them but nobody buys them!

Very true Chris. I have some EoI and a few more Conte, which at least had some decent barbarians. The price/interest ratio on the Russian options just does make it for me.

Given that Matt has frequently said that HBO Rome was one of his all time favorites, I do expect FL will get to Rome eventually. In the meantime, I guess I will put that period on patiently waiting.

Manufacturers,Get those Legions Marching will ya.^&grin

In regards to East of India figures- there would be absolutely nothing wrong historically with depicting The Roman- Persian wars using their existing lines. Granted, the 14th's history was made on the fields of Britannia but they also took part in some campaigns near Persia in the 160's. Of course, you could simply not use the Signifer displaying the 14th Legion and call them whatever legion you want.

I plan on posting a diorama using my EoI Romans fighting my Persians once I get more of their Persians. There is nothing wrong with the Eastern campaigns of the Empire- I enjoy them as much, if not more than the Western campaigns. Something to think about.
