Where did Britains get that stuff? (1 Viewer)

KV-- I worked for Grand Trunk which is now and always was part of Canadian National. I worked yards, road freight and Amtrak through the years. Chicago- Detroit-Flint - Port Huron and Sarnia Canada. J
Very cool John, I am/was a toy train guy as well.:D

I was a model railroader before I modeled anything else...and I still build some models from time to time. Over the years I have written some articles for magizines and given clinics on scenery for the NMRA.
The old GT line had the rails taken up a few years ago through Romeo, MI just south of me 2 miles. The old passenger station managed to survive however, but it is now used as a party store. I suppose this is really a lease on life for the structure as the R-O-W is now a very nice paved bike path!

The railroad landscape sure changed in the last 10 years. I remember the Romeo subdivision out of Pontiac. Main hubs are now closed along with all the subdivisions. Trains run from Chicago through the new tunnel at Port Huron into Canada. No longer do they change crews at Battle Creek.
The "brains" with college degrees tore up double main lines from Chicago to Port Huron and only use one mainline track which created long maxium working hours, then sit for hours waiting for relief crews. Yards, terminals, and subdivisions closed up. Now the railroad is more busy then ever and their stock still rises yearly. The whole group of officials behind ripping up the mainline were fired. The got rid of everyone involved plus a big scandal on how they stole equipment from the facilities. I remember a beautiful railroad grandfather clock that hung since 1900 in the Chicago roundhouse and the foreman cleaned it everyday till a high official came in and stole it for his home.
I have no respect for these people with no ethics and destroyed a century of good working conditions. John

Flipping pencil pushing geniuses! These were the people who merged and merged and merged and couldn't see past their balance sheets. Glad they all got fired. Hope they enjoy their new jobs as waiters:) You can tell that I am not a fan of tradition smashers. Tearing up track for scrap value is a bad idea. Never know when you are going to need it again.

Guess I got off track on thread ,so I won't say anymore except these guys would put the "robber barons" of the 1890's to shame. John

No need to apologise...When I looked at the house up here (1850s farm house) the GT track was in great shape and all of the culverts and grade crossings appeared to be new. Within a year of moving in it was all gone... If I ever get caught up with things I hope to build some more RR structures and a couple of small dioramas. The local Historical Society has some great period images and many of them are from the 1910 to 1914 period when the 'new' brownie cameras were all the rage. This would be a great period to model that would include the railroad scene, as it was the hub of every important activity in small town America. I may even post a couple images here!

Thanks Ken: I went to your diorama demonstration at the Chicago show and got some of your materials. What I can't find at Lowe's and Menards is the 1/4 inch medium density fiberboard. They only have 1" size. Any ideas where they sell it? Leadmen

I was out visiting Coldwater, MI yesterday to look at the ACW limber that needs to be restored for the display with Parrot Rifle no. 27. On my way back I stopped at a few places for supplies, including Home Depot to pick up some more MDF in 1/4" thickness. They had it there in 1/4", 1/2" and 3/4" thickness. Next time I am out I will stop at Lowes to see if they still stock it too.

Thanks Ken: I will check Home Depot in Coldwater. I go there about once a week. I live in Marshall. Leadmen
