I came across this article in the Wall Street Journal yesterday.

North Carolina and Virginia are having or may have an argument about which state may have the most war dead.

Until now, North Carolina was considered as having the most war dead but as this article shows this may not be the case.

I would think this type of notoriety would be something they would wish not to acknowledge. I would be somewhat happier with having lost less!!!!!

"You like apples?"

Especially in a rich man's war on the wrong side of history that they lost.

"Well, How do you like them apples?"

Yes, that was my reaction too but maybe it has to do with who made the most sacrifice for the ideals for which they fought.

A quick review of the order od battle for Gettysburg shows that each Confederate Brigade consisted mainly, if not totally, of Regiments from one state , whereas the Union Divisions appear to be a mix of Regiments from diifferent states .

I am wondering why the different philosophy between north and south in determining order of battle and how this effected the concentatrion of casualties in certain states and localities within each state .

That should go to the Union regiments of New York and Pennsylvania.

"....Neither Mr. Howard nor Mr. Ray wants to start a war between the states. "I'm not interested in fighting it out over who lost the most," says Mr. Howard, a 31-year-old North Carolinian. "I'm interested in getting it as accurate as possible."..."

..and that's when the fight started.
