On another thread several members posted that they are retired.
Since I plan on retireing (a second time, this time for good) at the end of the year was wondering who is completly retired and how old you are.
I will be 60 in August, retired after 30 years with the St Louis Police Department, didn,t work for 10 months then got a job as a police officer with the University of Mo. - St. Louis Police Department, been there for almost 8 years.

I am retired. Maybe sometime I might look for part time work to keep my hobby going. Worked almost 8 years on Chicago PD and Evergreen Park, then ended up working full time from my part time job. Worked 26 years as a Train Driver (Locomotive Engineer) for Canadien National RR. Worked yards, Road trains to various cities and Amtrak for awhile (Which I hated). I am 65 years old-wow- still hanging in there. Been on disability for last 10 years. Leadmen

You can mark me down on that list! At 56 not a moment to soon!!

Spent most of my life running businesses and spent time as a Consumer

Affairs Director for a large Company. My most memorable working moment

you ask?

I never forgot my early days as a Teamster from Jersey, when I left Anchor

Motor Freight in 1969 I obtained a union withdrawl card (so I could be re-

instated in the Future without having to re-join) though I went into

management I was always a Teamster at heart.

I always earned money for the companies I worked for, but never once not

even for a second did I hesitate to tell them to Kiss my A** the second they

went to far. I never minded the long hours, or hard work, but verbal abuse,

or disrespect always had the same result as my very first job.

At 16 I worked my way up at Stewarts Rootbeer from the lowly Fry Cook to

the underated order caller & hotdog man. One day I guess we were making a

bit to much noise in the kitchen and Les the 50 something overweight

manager got on the microphone and called us a bunch of A**holes! Eveyone

at the counter had a good laugh. About a minute or so later that had a better

laugh when I came out of the kitchen and hit Les in the head with my apron

as he was making a shake.....which fell out of his hands and sprayed

everyone with just a taste o' choclate.

Been at it ever since. One of the things I always pay attention to now is

the working conditions of people I come in contact with.....at restaurants,

home centers, even the Post Office. It seems to me that most people just

aren't having much fun at work, and its a shame because it is not just a job

its also their life. I wish more people enjoyed what they do to earn a living.

Gentle Friends,

After 37 years of continuing employment with the same organization, I retired in June, 2005. I have not regretted my decision to retire for even one second. I am having too much fun to do otherwise. At present, I am 63 years of age and I have no plans to return to employment, either part-time or full-time.

I was employed as the chief administrator of a service providing department in a medium sized University. The role was very challenging, but filled with stress. While at the University, I enjoyed a wonderful relationship with the University Police Department as well as with other administrative and academic departments. Life in an academic community is truly interesting and exciting as most of the employees are very intelligent and well educated, including the grounds crew and skilled tradesmen.

I never hesitated to discuss collecting toy soldiers with anyone at work. Never did I experience strange looks or judgemental comments. Once, the University Alumni Office included an article in their regular publication that highlighted five University employees that were avid collectors. One person collected pez dispensers, another collected military shoulder patches, yet another collected farm toys. I, as well as my collection, was included in the five persons that were highlighted. It was great fun.

Now, I am fully retired and I simply don't miss the stress that so many workplaces produce. Whatever years are left to me I fully plan to enjoy!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Leadmen,

Sounds like you had a very tough job. You have my respect. Hang in there.

I have been at the same company for almost 26 years. I guess we're part of a dying breed. I am 55 now and with a teen age son, not retiring anytime soon. Plus I need to afford this hobby. I just got a promotion so I guess I'll be probably hanging around (hopefully) for another 9 years. I'm having too much fun.

18 Months from tomorrow............. City Firefighting has taken its toll on me, and I have not been feeling too well since I served at the World Trade Center. I could retire tomorrow, but if I hang in for the 18 more months, the pension will be a lot better. If the man upstairs lets me retire when I plan to, I will have 30 1/2 years on the job, 10 as a private, 10 as a Captain and 10 1/2 as a Chief, serving in the Cities busiest companies deep in the Combat Zone, and I will be 55 years old. Alex: I commend you on your years of hard service.I knew many firefighters and my best friend on the PD was always going to fire calls. I remember us out of our district pulling hoses etc. I would listen to radio in case we got a call. His dad was a battalion Chief and he was on the list to join FD. His first assignment was Snorkel Squad#1 downtown. One of the busiest stations. He loved every minute. I have not seen him in about 7 years but imagine he is retired. Leadmen

Are you saying he left the PD to join the FD...If he did, how long did he have on the PD....I am familiar with Snorkel Squad #1, I believe I have a picture of it in a Book I have.....Alex

Yes, we were buddiies for about six years working on PD. He wanted the Fire Dept. and when he got called he left the police. He was an engineer then I think he got promoted to Lieutentant. He loved the work and I took test but never made the list. If your dad was a firemen you had a better chance of getting on list. Nowdays when they have a exam, thousands apply but not many hired. List may last for years.I think he was better being a firemen. He could aggravate the public on the PD. Stop a little old guy on traffic stop and get in a big arguement with him.One day we had a contest who could write the most parking tickets, both wrote over a hundred but just warning tickets, no fines. We got a laugh out of it. He was a cop about 6 years. Leadmen

Leadmen, I guess your road trains were on rails. I've never driven an Aussie Road Train, but I sure hate passing them :)

Is that for real? Never saw anything like it. We had roadrailer trains that ran on tracks then lowered regular tires for driving on roads. I don't think they use them anymore. Besides I would get lost without rails or signals. Leadmen:D

Not really, that was actually a pic of the then world record holder, which is now 104 trailers (1,474 metres).

Actually road trains downunder are usually three trailers long, but some in the more remote areas such as those used to haul mineral ore or large numbers of cattle can have six or more trailers.

However these long road trains are not allowed near major urban areas such as where I live, but I sometimes see 'B-Doubles' (two trailers) on the highway between here and Brisbane. Of course semi trailers (single trailer) can be seen everywhere, but downunder they usually have 22 wheels because most prime movers in Australia have three rear axles: http://www.inselfdefense.net/roadtraintext/

Thanks OZ, the picture is neat. Never saw anything like it. Our state allows two trailers but no more. Indiana can haul three trailers. Leadmen

Oz that is a trip!

As usual I'm the youngest so far. I'm 44 and at this point I have no plans to retire. Retire is a dirty word! I've done so many jobs I don't know what to tell you. But for the last 13 years or so I've been in the trades. I manage an apartment and work in a toy soldier shop as well:eek:

You need to take another age poll we've grown. Add space for retired or not.
