Who's best at plastic? (1 Viewer)

Yeah, but they probably cast them in red and green, people sell that stuff on e-bay all the time and they come in some bizarre colors.

Oh yes! I saw the Marx Minutemen and British in multiple colors. The Hobby Bunker had a bunch from Mexico in odd colors. Luckily I found the nice mid blue Union troops. (Re-Marx Blue it's called by Classic Toy Soldiers) The powder blue looks weak.

Yeah, plus I wonder about the quality of those figures, Ive seen some bad ones,

I've gotten some that have "short shots" and other defects. The Hobby Bunker has sold me a few as I knew they were defects that I could convert like these standing Mexican lancers. I replaced the bad lances.

They bought the repro Marx in huge drums and had a guy sort them, so bags of them are usually good.

There's a place in New York that sells these repro-marx but says "buyer beware!" Classic Toy Soldiers quality control is quite good, says beware as well.

I get a good number at shows were you can sift though bins of them to get what you want.

Even if the lance(?) is there it never looked much like a lance anyway, although I know what it was supposed to be. A few tweaks and they make a fair casualty.

Just curious . . . in your opinion, who currently produces the best and most affordable plastic toy soldiers? Do you have different choices for certain time periods? And who has the best painted plastic figures and the best unpainted figures?

Taking all things into consideration, Airfix gets my vote.

I don't do WW II but I would include Airfix for their WW II troops.

Ed you know as well as I do we'll see new plastic from Conte like Rome was built it's not in a day:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:and it's hard to beat the plastics he's made.
I'm not so sure anymore, all the signs do not point towards that conclusion.

Don't get me wrong, I think he's good for the hobby, he certainly pushes the envelope and he probably has a lot to do with the improved figures we see from other manufacturer's. However, all that being said he certainly has a strange way of doing business. I hope you're correct and I am erroneous.

Hey all,

I too thought the Conte Spartans were simply amazing. One of my favorite time periods, and the figures really pushed what could be done in the toy soldier business. One of my favorite purchases.

I thought the volume of Imex/Accurate/Revell poses for Civil War was awesome. Sure, they are a bit smaller, but the variety of troops makes up for it in my book.

TSSD consistently puts out new product, and it's all top notch, and always of eras that I find interesting. Loved their WWII Russians, and wish they could give us some more.

All time favorite playset was the Barzso Tripoli playset. The lush colors, the excellent buildings, the unique time period... I don't know of another set that could possibly top that one for me.

Beau

Hard one to answer for me. Conte of course, New Airfix, TSSD and sadly Accurate being out of production. Those are my top four. I hope Airfix will do Napoleonics soon.

Airfix are still the Benchmark.
Conte are simply great my fav being the Vikings/Normans & Civil War...The Spartans did not grab me that much.
I realy like the TSSD WW2 stuff...
But i paint just about every brand out there

I like the Airfix 1815 British, but their Highlanders and Imperial Guard have awkward poses and muskets are too short.
I have a good number of Conte Alamo figures but I wish the Texans weren't retreads of Confederates and Roger's Rangers. The John Wayne Alamo movie charactor figures are fun.

You forgot 24th foot and AWI figures.

Yes I did! Thanks. The sureon, wounded man are Zulu. Mel Gibson is in the AWI mix. Not too bad a figure though.

I'd like to see the Texans re-issued in the same plastic as the Mexican troops. I have over 100 of them. The recent Alamo movie used a term "dirty Dickens" for the good number of Texans in eastern civilian coats and top hats that the costumers put on the extas. I can see that Conte was going for the John Wayne movie look with more frontier types.

Don't forget Corporal Schiess or Schweiss whatever his name was. I think I counted once and like 15 of the 33 defenders were not really Alamo, maybe more if you consider the New Orleans Grays, not sure what they were designed for considering one had a revolver as a weapon on his plug in arm. Mexican American War perhaps? Generally speaking though, they were nice figures if not a bit thick bodied.

Thanks again! I forgot the good corporal! He does have uses as a gunner or fighting to the end. The Greys figures need a much bigger forgage/wheel cap, but they have use as Mexican War as well. I think Conte modeled them after the Wayne movie caps on some extras.

At least they didn't slip in the dwarf and viking prince from the War Lord series.

Are you sure?

Well, considering that per piece, they all around the same price, I'd probably list Conte figures as the best, though why he decided to enlarge them I don't get.

TSSD figures are also good and come a veryclosesecond.

Barzso's are excellent as well. Just a shade off the above. And contrary to an earlier post, his figures pretty much for the last 10 years have not been brittle. Yes, the very first ones were, but that pretty much didn't last long. As it is, Conte's resin figures made the breakable Barzso ones look like they were made of solid steel.

AIP figures are very static.

Replicants range from very good to the opposite of very good.

I still like Airfix and Marx, of course. Speaking of Airfix, Hat's 1/32 Napo figures look like they could fit right in with the Airfix ones. Very similar.
Generally, we are paying somewhere in the $1 to $2 range per figure which isn't bad I guess. But I miss the bags of them for 99 cents.

Airfix 1/32nd British Paras and German Paras and Australian inf WW2

also - the new hat Napoleonics

regards 9th
