I make no claim to knowledge of European infantry tactics. However, I would like to make an observation based on my experience handling and firing ACW-era long arms. Though the socket bayonet does not weigh much, especially in relation to the firearm, that 18+ inches of steel stuck on the end of the barrel does shift the center of balance of the piece. I really disliked firing my 1861 Springfield with a fixed bayonet. Also, you need to exercise greater caution when ramming, so you don't slice up your hand.
That said, while I mainly collect ACW, I have always admired the Black Watch. I have all of the Museum series, and these Napoleonics are very tempting. I may have to build a small line.
