Guys...

Have had this film some time watched it once while doing some work so, did not really pay attention however, just watched it properly today and, have to say what a excellent movie. Normally, pick little faults with movies but, this was great and, sparked my interest about the Navajo so, doing some reading on them. Anyone know any good sites or books etc on their role in WWII??

Haven,t watched this movie for a while and I remember why. Seems Nicholas Cage has made John Basilone, John Wayne, and any other past Marine heros, look like boy scouts when it comes to killing Japs.
We didn,t need the A-bomb to force Japans surrender, we needed Nicholas Cage!

This movie pulled me in two directions. Kinda liked the combat sequences, even if over the top, but just didn't care for the movie overall. Don't really know why other than I didn't really care for the characters. -- Al

I've read, Warriors, Navajo Code Talkers. It is out in paper back and I remember it being a good read. I remember when I was younger, I went to a McDonalds in Gallup, New Mexico, they had pictures on the walls about the code talkers. I was fascinated. Later I joined the Marines and learned more. They have made amazing sacrifices for our country and I salute them.

Thanks for the info
Mitch

Quick update.
My wife and I were in Albuquerque New Mexico this week for the Ballon Fiesta. While touring Old Town I saw six Navajo Code talkers doing a book signing. I bought the book "Navajo Weapon" and had all six sign it. It gave me goose bumps to shake hands with these heroes. One gentleman was wearing a hat saying that he was an Iwo Jima Survivor. Made my whole year! Semper Fi!

Wow. That would have been something I am now sick as a dog!!!

I have this film, I think the story is great and the heroes discussed deserve much more recognition.

Afraid I was not impressed with the film though 2-3/10 .

Much prefer Letters from Iwo, Flags of our Fathers, Kokoda and especially the brilliant thin red line that just seems to get better.

Another fan of "The Thin Red Line"? I thought I was all alone.:D It is a great film with great depth that seems to have been lost in the shuffle of SPR. I actually really like SPR but would much rather watch TRL, which IMHO, is much the more interesting movie. -- Al

First time I saw it thought it was too slow. It is, but as you say it has depth that you appreciate more.

The assault on the bunkers on the ridge as about as good as it gets without being OTT.

The characters are fabulous, just about all of them. I especially cringe and admire the 'I have been in the Army for 15 years so attack because I have a big ego and need to make a mark so screw your men' bit is without comparison so far imo.

One of the best films yet to identify with PBI in depth ?

Quite agree. Nolte did an outstanding job as the career officer questing for glory and promotion, at all costs. Later, when Nolte is sitting alone, looking around him and at his men, you can see that cost in his eyes. It is a superb moment in the film. Loved the assault on the hilltop bunker. I thought the scene where the men went forward on hands and knees through the tall grass to spot the bunker, was absolutely harrowing. Claustraphobia and terror of the unknown in broad daylight has never been shown better, IMO. Sean Penn was great as the burned out Sgt. The whole cast was great. -- Al
