Great close-up action shots of your Marines, Steve. Love the flames! Very realistic.

I agree, I really like how you did the [ Flame <> Smoke ] effect ... really well done.
Nice action packed scene, like the one in the LIFE magazines on WWII.

I think it was called ... Pictorial History of World War II

The fire and smoke effect of the flame thrower is fantastic! Congratulations! How did you do it?

Thank you Guys for the compliments, they're always welcome !{sm4}

Ok Sentaapua. The fire and smoke effect is created with some polyester fibre, the sort you find in modern cushion stuffing. Which you can spray or dip in dark grey / black water diluted paint (50/50) Just cheap children's type with a little PVA glue mixed in to help it stick to the Polyester fibre and allow to dry. If dipping squeeze out excess paint. When dry you may need to tease out the fibres a little to give the smoke effect. For the fire in the smoke I placed several battery operated tea lights the sort that you find in the £/$ store.

For the Flamethrower effect, you'll need a length of wire, I used a strand of copper wire from a piece of electric cable as it does not rust like steel, but you could just as well use steel. My piece was about 12.5 inches / 32cm long, on to this you thread white cotton wool balls. Tease a little of the ball out and stick it to the end of the wire. I used super glue. Then add more balls until you have filled your length of wire. Glue the last one in position.
Then base coat with yellow paint, same paint as before just cheap children's paint, keep the first couple inches yellow, then paint the middle section orange and finally paint / dab the last few inches Red. Allow to dry and then just dab on a few black smudges.

Oh and wear plastic gloves or you'll have paint all over you hands like I did !

Looking forward to K&C's Third Wave ! (Soon I Hope !)

Yon and me, Steve.
We need to finish the last few that were already shown and THEN .... SOMETHING SPECIAL! {sm3}

Yep, need all them and some more ! Need BAR'S all sorts of poses, Riflemen Dittio Tommy gunners also and more M1 Carbines. MG, Mortar, Bazooka crews, Corpsman, Wind talkers + Arty. Another wave of LCVP, Amtracs, DUKW's and tanks.

How about a line honouring the Marines US AND UK, with highest medal of Valour. British Empire, Victoria Cross and American Medal of Honour Winners in action.

Oh and we might need some Japs and / or North Koreans too. Why not go crazy and do both !{sm4}

Mmmm, Something Special, I wonder what that could be, as you say a few more to go, including this guy before we get there, that I see on the right of the K&C Tarawa dio, though the pic credit says Iwo Jima.

Amazing flame thrower effect. The blending of the three colors is really superb. Chris

And it was exactly in that kind of style I was trying to emulate ! :salute::

Thanks for the tutorial Steve! Will try to replicate it on my Pacific diorama. :wink2:

Came across this on Youtube;

Great find, Steve.
THANK YOU!

A few things I noticed as I watched it a few times, will help make my Tarawa dio a bit different from the superb ones already under construction.

*There are not many (fully intact) palm trees anywhere on the atoll. With my palm tree making skill maybe better to use smashed and destroyed ones as that is how they will prbably look anyway.:p

*Separate dio of US Marines loading on transports or in invasion Amtrac's

*The debris is paramount everywhere you look.

*There are more "structures /huts" than I imagined.

*The concealed sniper pits might make interesting features.

*Battlefield surgery (with some upcoming ??? figures)

*Japanese snipers "tied" themselves to the trees. Hummmm ..:rolleyes2: how can I do that?

More ....

Hi Larry

Some ideas to muse over !

Yep you're spot on about the trees and so like you I'll be making a few of them as well to go with those already completed.
I think dowelling cut to length with indentations for the trunk and with a few Palm fronds stuck directly on will do away with the need of using wire and some will just be the dowelling with a few bullet scars !
I'm sure after a bit of experimenting something satisfactory will come outl.

Agree with you about the debris also. I saw a video where dried herbs (Oregano seems ideal) that were given a light wash with a darker colour were being used for ground litter for a jungle setting and that could well work if used a little less densely, It'll make the dio smell nice too !{sm4}

Structures look to be pretty beaten up ones. Dowelling for log ones and foam covered with polyfilla, painted and gritted for concrete. A couple of pieces of bent wire inserted into shell holes and blacked up a bit would give the reinforced concrete look.

Yes the Sniper idea is going to be tricky if you want him dangling from a tree depending on how and where he has tied himself on his arms could be over his head towards the ground, if tied at leg or arched over backwards or forwards if at waist. Gravity and all that !
Only thing I can think of, off the top of my head without resorting to some drastic figure alterations,
I suppose you could have a "live" sniper using a kneeling figure partly concealed in an undamaged tree ? Of course perhaps K&C are working on it already !!
