The season kicks off this Saturday in the Premier League. Chelsea and Man City look to be competing for the top spots.

Arsenal added a trophy on Sunday with a 3-0 win in the Community Shield against Man City (although not the Man City regulars). Good win for the Gunners.

Tonight, in an impressive performance Real Madrid won the UEFA Super Cup against Sevilla in Cardiff in what could be a six cup year. One down, five to go ^&cool RM is loaded with quality players. Next up next week, the Spanish Super Cup against Athletico Madrid. Hala Madrid!

Spain in have won five of the last six Super Cups. Awesome!

I think a lot of people fancy Arsenal to do well this year Brad.

Rob,

Although they've made some good signings and Wenger has strengthened the team, I can't see them supplanting Man City or Chelsea. Those two teams are very strong.

Brad

Not that I'm a Man U fan -- far from it -- but so far they look bad today. No pace, losing the midfield war -- and they're playing at home in the opener {eek3}

Looks like whatever Van Gaal said at half worked: nice goal by Rooney.

You may well be right there Brad, I think this season will be interesting though, they all need a good start.

Back to the drawing board for Man U. Swansea looked the better team.

Man U are supposed to be in the hunt for DiMaria, the Argentine who plays for Real Madrid, who has no place on the team since they signed Toni Kroos. They better sign him quick!

So far every home team but one (Arsenal) have not won in their opener and, as we speak, Liverpool is trying to hold off Southampton in the last 20 minutes remaining.

Liverpool managed to pull it out 2-1 but the Saints were magnificent, putting pressure on Liverpool almost the entire second half. They almost tied it in the late stages but the ball got too much of the top bar. Great match to watch.

As we head into Saturday's matches, La Liga starts this weekend, Balotelli is heading for Liverpool (good luck with that) and Athletico Madrid has -- unfortunately -- just beaten Real in the second leg to win the Spanish Super Cup :(

Man U only has 1 point out of a possible 6. However, they have purchased DiMaria from Real Madrid so that should improve the look of the team. This sale is a mistake for Real but the way they do things in Madrid -- constantly bringing in stars whether they need them or not -- made the sale necessary. Still, they will mss his energy on the field.

La Liga opened this weekend and Barca looked good although their opponent Elche is not a very good team; they were almost relegated last year and Barca played with ten men most of the game. Heck, Elche could have had a couple of more men and it wouldn't have made a difference.

Real all is not looking great so far. They struggled against a Cordoba team that hasn't been in the too flight in 42 years. They're not clicking yet. May take awhile.

Although Man U was not fielding a top team in their League Cup Match, to lose 4-0 to a third division team is embarrassing.

We're into the international "friendlies" this week.

Spain kicked it off looking as miserable as they did in the WC, losing to France 1-0. Not one shot on goal. Diego Costa, who has been lethal so far for Chelsea, looks lost in the Spanish system. They need to figure out a way to fit him in.

Tonight Brasil and Colombia continued where they left off: a lot of hard play and fouls and many yellow cards. In the second half a red was handed out to the Colombians and that seemed to quiet things down. However, the ref wasn't very good at restoring order. Maybe no one could have done a good job. The Brasilians had a lot of good play and creativity in the first half but hard play seemed to sap the match of a lot of good football. Neymar converted a brilliant free kick in the late stages to pull out the win, 1-0.

The European teams start qualifiers for Euro 2016 next week. Hopefully, the Spanish can beat Macedonia.

Watching him score that goal was worth watching the game! You`re right, the rest of it was mostly hard play....

Think I've heard everything now.

Franck Ribery of France retired from playing for the national team, because of injury and "wanting to spend more time with his family." However, he will continue to play for his club team, Bayern.

The French football authorities have told him that if he they called him up to play for the national team, he can't refuse as it's not his decision, but the decision of the French national team. Incredible. On top of that, if he's called up and refuses to play, he could be suspended for three matches from Bayern.

You can't make this up!

On top of that, the head of UEFA, who is also French, said that Ribery is a Frenchman and the European Champiionships in 2016 are taking place in France, not in Poland. Nice way to insult another country.

Spain got off the schneid today in the Euro qualifiers, 5-1. Of course, they did beat Macedonia, the 75th ranked team in the world, but, hey, a win's a win.

Brad

Madrid are flying. After two dismal performances against Real Sociedad and Athletico, they scored 5 against Basel and 8 against Deportivo today. Yes, 8! Still some questions about the back but they are playing better too. What a day! ^&cool

Speaking of Champions League, some surprises. Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool didn't look too good. The Reds were lucky to win against a no name from Bulgaria and Simeone's men lost to Olyiampkos.

But today is Real's day!

League football resumes tomorrow after a break for Euro qualifying and the present and past World Cup holders Germany and Spain looked none too good. Germany is a bit complacent and lost to Poland while Casillas in net continues to look shaky for Spain; DeGea, the Man U net minder, started the next match against Luxembourg for Spain so maybe we've seen the last of the Spanish captain. If we have, it's been an illustrious career: a WC, two Euro titles, Champions League titles and League titles.
