I am looking for used molds for soldier casting. Primarily Napoleonic. This would be the gravity type of molds. Also maybe some used casting equipment. Hey, a guy can dream, can't he? Contact me here or pm me:)

Hi,

Have you checked Dutkins? They used to have really good prices for new stuff. I have seen some on ebay but not many.

Dave

Hi,

I have to say I'm not sure. I have some molds from when I was a kid that were from them and they were roughly 1:32nd Scale But I will look at their website and let you know what I think. Hopefully there is someone here who can answer the question. More later

Dave

The pictures on their website seem distorted. I am refering to the Lil Army molds. Have you tried them?

Hi Again,

I took a quick look at the molds and if you click on the picture it makes it look right I think they are ok but would say you need to get one mold and experiment to see how they look to you and the cost doesnt seem too bad for a trial run. Plus if you dont like they way they look you can always put it on ebay.

But I would go ahead and try a mold or two.

All the best

Dave

I probably will. Check my adds. I will try to fund this by selling off unneeded soldiers;)

I wouldn,t go to crazy buying molds till you try doing this first, its not as easy as it sounds and its hard to get a good pour on these molds and you,ll have lots of figures that didn,t come out right with missing arms legs ect. and also lots of flash to trim off.
Some molds pour better then others and the first couple of pours don,t seem to work till the mold heats up. Its a lot more work then you think so just try a mold or two and see what happens.
Maybe some of the forum members here could give you a few tips as to which moulds work better and what metal to use but I tried a prince augastine napoleonic mould and a britains detail knock off mould and didn,t like the results and gave up.
I hope you have better luck then me. I think I,d better stick to making my lead fishing sinkers!!!:p Maybe I should have tried using some other metal then lead??? but the price of the lead was real good!!!(free)
Again I wish you the best of luck, let me know how you make out and if you make out good you can let me know what I was doing wrong!!!

Does that mean you want to get rid of your molds? I bought a melting pot used for 25.00 bucks. I have done some casting with mixed results. If you want to know what you did wrong ,arms and legs get screwed up because air got trapped in the mold. cutting a vent helps with that.

Pure lead probably will NOT give you very good castings. I get lead free casting alloy from conquest industries in CA. Tin and Antimony.I probably should use a little lead with it but have not yet.
Gravity molds can be difficult. I havent tried them in years.
Theres also an outfit called CASTINGS up near Puget Sound in WAshington State that sells silicone rubber molds for Napoleonics in 54mm. Look like Deetail and Airfix figures. All the mold making material, alloys, tools etc.
Never used them but they've been around for years.

Good luck and keep some Aloe Vera handy!

Hi again,

I used to smoke the molds with a candle to get the sooty and we also heated the metal molds up on the old furnace and would get good castings. Of course that was a long while ago and I was using old lead salvaged from houses that were being wrecked or remodled so there was always a bunch of old scrap water pipes available and back then the builders would give the stuff to you so they didnt have to pay to haul it off to a scrap yard. Of course the new metals probably are safer but when you're a kid all you care about is massive quantities to paint and use in the latest backyard war. I bet at the height of it we had 4-5 hundred GI and Germans plus a ton of plastic and Britains Plastic WWII so I could field about 850 troops with tank and bb gun field artillery! Oh the good old days!

Anyway I would try to make some and see how you like it you can also buy unpainted castings for cheap so that might be a good route to wander down.

Good luck

Dave

I ordered molds from the Puget Sound site. They been around a long time. Prince August molds are mostly 40mm semi flat but liked the figures.I will post some pics of them some time.My buddy makes molds out of silex rubber and we been casting Britain figures.
I buy my metal at a shop in Grand Rapids MI. I get 50/50 tin lead bars and when I cast I also put in a little atimony (type metal). Straight lead is no good. Tin adds strength to figure and flows better. Sometimes you tinker with the rubber mold if not flowing to tips. Add another air vent with a hobby knife to point where metal not reaching. On the rubber molds I use powder to coat insides. No powder that got fragrances added. A little clamping with clamps or masking tape to hold mold halves together. Too tight mold won't cast right and too loose metal spills out bottom. You are best to try a few molds. I have the 40mm molds I don't use much. Works well to make armies. Flagbearers only need a couple of guys. Same with officers and drummers.Look under Google for Prince August co. in Ireland or Castings in Washington. Leadmen

As an aside, I've never cast my own figures but when I was a kid a mate and I got some lead and melted it down to make some sinkers for fishing. We lit a fire in the backyard and I got one of my mums saucepans to melt the lead in and used some of her silver teaspoons as molds for the sinkers. Mums can't tell when their saucepans are used over an open fire to melt lead in can they  :) Btw, molten lead on your hand really hurts

Hi Guys,

The molds I was using were the metal ones that had clips on the bottom that held them together and acted as the base of the mold they had small wooden handles so you didnt get burned. Because like our friend oz pointed out the lead really stings when you get it on you.

I have never tried the rubber ones so I have no expeieince with those. Also could one of you post the like to the Casting company in the Puget Sound area because I live on the sound and would like to look them up.

All the best

Dave
