Spooky and a little sad!! Would be great though for WWII Living History/Re-enactment Shows!!..Cant see it happening though with the chance
of unexploded stuff laying around... Just the job for the Tilly and the UXB boys!!.

I'd love to get in there and have a look around, but the chance of getting blown to smithereens kind of puts a damper on it!

But the article said it was open to the public once a year. What do they do, sweep the open area for ordnace first?

Nice article. I see they still use it for training. It's too bad about the folks who were relocated "just for 6 months" and never got back.

It kind of reminds me of the documentary on Chernobyl (sp?) and how the wilderness is taking back the town near the reactors. That was pretty earie to watch. I wish I could recall the name of the documentary. They showed it on the Discovery channel about 4 or so years ago.

There was a small town here in PA called Centralia that was forced to be evacuated when the underground mines caught fire. Most of the buildings were torn down and the residents were forced to relocate. The fire may burn for a thousand years. Other towns in the area may eventually have a similar fate as the fire spreads. It was the inspiration for the movie and game called "Silent Hill."

A couple of Areas in Canada were taken over by the military during and after WW2 and are still in use today. I had a Sergeant Major once show me the exact spot his house was on as a boy. Basements and old wells still cause havoc at night!

Lots in Germany also. I lived 2K south of a portion of Auerbach id/Opf. where the US took it for Grafenwöhr Training Area.
