Hello everyone,
I was lucky last week and got my hands on 6 issues of "The London Illustrated News", three of them from 1915 and the other three from 1916.
It sure is a most fascinating feeling to see the articles, photos, drawings, sketches, advertisement in a newspapers that are about 100 Years old by now.
Very interesting!
Attached you see some sample pics.
Reading these papers is like a most authentic history lesson.

Konrad,

yes they are a brilliant testement to the Great War, showing what went on day to day, and using photography and drawings.

I have one original copy here, its been in the family for years, maybe since WW1.

Its so sad to see on the front page the photos of the officers killed that week in battle, if they had to put in all the names (of the other ranks), it would fill a phone book!!!!!!

I wish they were available on-line, like other publications, so we all could browse them from the comfort of our own home.....

Hi Konrad

Great pictures :salute::

I love reading my copies of the ILN from the 1880's, they are wonderful reference material

Cheers

Martyn:)

Great illustrations!^&cool^&cool I especially loved the shot of the pusher plane (Vickers Gunbus, Fe2b or Dh1) shooting down the Albatros.

It's online but not currently available to individuals for some odd reason.

Very interesting. I have a very similar collection of another vintage newspaper released at the same time and full of articles that are exactly the same called ' War Budget weekly Illustrated' , the collection is made up of four binders worth of issues packed with news from the front. They were in my Grandma and Grandads loft and were passed to me a decade or more ago.

Konrad,

Nice to see some interest in these old newspapers and agree that they are a great source of information and period artwork. The Illustrated London News also used to publish "The Illustrated War News" weekly dealing specifically with the conflict. I picked up a bound volume of the first 60 volumes a while back and although it is tatty it is a nice thing to look through.

I've attached a page below that some of my fellow Aussies may appreciate of soldiers practicing bomb throwing at Gallipoli. There was a bomb making 'factory' there where they made them out of jam tins, so it might have been taken near there.

Another old magazine worth looking out for is "The Great War- I Was There" which was published in the late thirties and as well as great photos included many accounts written by the old soldiers twenty years later.

Hope it is of interest.

Scott

Thanks for the comments and additional info, guys.
There are advertisements in my London Illustrated News for the "Illustrated War News".
Here is a sample.
