There was a specialized version of the B-17 built called the YB-40. It was built to be a heavily armed escort to regular B-17's and it carried 16 or 17 Mgs. The YB-40 had an extra 2-gun upper turret at the radio op position as well as doubled waist guns. The plane was too heavy to keep pace with formations once bombs were dropped and thus the experiment was cancelled after 14 missions. -- Al
