If you're a REMF, not so much if you're a Grunt ! {sm2}

Now I know why Bob's comedy was so well liked.^&grin Love this trio. A fine scene, Steve.

Bob Hope, yesterday I cycled past the house he lived in England, Weston Super Mare, prior to leaving for the US in 1908, aged around 5, on the wall was a blue commemorative plague, see below for picture from the newspaper of when the local mayor etc unveiled the plague in 2020. At the time he lived there probably 2 rooms and small kitchen downstairs, no more than 3 bedrooms upstairs and probably an outside toilet. He was born in London and there is another plague on that house, which was similar.

When I got home I googled Bob Hope’s house and it make me smile as his house in the US came up, what a difference, see picture, the comparison just made me smile as I realised the difference in style and size.

Funny man and not afraid of making himself the butt of the joke. The best joke i heard about him was from another comedian who said his divorce was so bad and their was so much bitter fighting between him and his wife that Bob Hope was think of coming over and doing a concert show for his lawyers office.

Sorry if bit off topic.

I didnt have to,,being tossed out by my Vung tau waheeni,,,on xmas minus a few ,,I convoyed back to the 1st Div Base and Hope was due ,The holiday morning,,with a huge amount already in the crowd after I survived half the Bn going out to secure things,,another fool and i picked up about 6 morning beers ,,some how 'excuse us etc " all the way to the 2nd row,,,,great time,,joey heatherton seemed blasted out of her mind,,and hope was funny,,as anita bryant sang silent night we went thru beer 5,,,and lusted at the stage,,,at the end they drove by us and someone held up joey in the seat,,
More bizzare the friend and i hitched downtown,,,for an alternate christmas at mama sans and got back too late for the big dinner for our boys,,
" Its a soldiers nature to get drunk and dumb" James Jones,,,,I did tell the family I had a wonderful holiday etc as my cheerful letters always said,, It was "the Christmas Truce" so the Navy doing an airstrike out there got a comment from hope,,

Could NOT be more INCORRECT,,,in every way,,especially the casual use of the term without any actual knowlege beyond the thread,,Half the 2nd BN 18th inf, Ist inf div ,at the Hope show 12-25-1966 after 30 days in the Rung sat including casualties,,A lot of REMFS died in country Especially when replacements were short and manning weapons ,,patrols and sweeps in every Combat Bn and base,,an insult to those on the scene,,in country always under the chance of a downtown strike,,strayrocket or VC attack,,aviation crash etc
Wrong term in every way,,especially used casually to me anyway

Bromhead mate.

No insult meant to you or those you served with, I was four at the time you served in country and in the UK.

So good to hear your own personnel remembrances from the time you served in your unit, all very interesting to hear different recollections from individual different perspectives.

Perhaps because of for the most part, the terms of service with individuals rather than units being replacements because of the determined rotation of troops at the time and leaving aside Air force personnel and including aircrew, those left who you'd not normally consider involved in active combat rolls other than than Security and Just going by what I've read from Army troops of your and other divisions and leaving aside Marines for this.

From USO show's being missed by those out in the field and not all top entertainers remaining or returning to catch those who have still to come in, such as Nancy Sinatra who did on at least one occasion return to catch those who were out in the field, to situations that you'd not think troops serving the same cause but from different countries such as US and ROK would end up in violent confrontations leading to deaths at such entertainment venues.

And again racial tensions leading to same on troop transports from US to Vietnam, but all these things happened, not on every occasion, but did happen.

As I'm sure you are aware "stuff" sometimes for reasons no one can fathom occurs, but just because it happens on occasion doesn't make it the norm.

Anyway as I said at the beginning, no insult was meant !

never heard or saw most any of that ,,especially on early transport of troops by ship,,my thoughts etc are done by being on the scene,,really a wild thought to hear of confrontations between U S and ROK troops even in thought,,

Saw my Vietnam combat friend yesterday. He said when they had shows, they would separate the combat troops from the REMFS. They had to leave their weapons behind, but he always hid his 45 in the front of his pants. They also had guard positions with M60s in case of a riot/fights.
