Forum friends,

I have the good fortune of having the acquaintence of esteemed portraitist Octavio Qualigny, who has been producing quality portraits in Europe, the US and South Africa for almost 60 years. He has in recently taken an interest in producing "historical portraits" for some patrons. I suggested that some forum members may be interested in owning one of themselves.

So now is your opportunity to have an original quality portrait (in oil) of YOURSELF in the pose, genre, and/or uniform of your choosing.

The way it works is this, provide a good quality digital image of the historical subject that you want the painting modelled after and a good quality digital image of yourself in a similar pose and angle. Octavio will "base" the portrait on the original painting or photograph, taking into account the difference in body type and produce a reasonable facsimile. Do not expect an exact duplicate of the original, as slight differences in angles and body shape will determine the final product. Portraits are generally "busts," meaning head and shoulders as not to diminish the detail of your face. These are genuine portraits painted by hand on canvas, not Photoshop tricks or images printed on canvas.

These portraits (11"wx14"h) usually run $900.USD. However, any orders received before Christmas 2010 will cost only $499.USD plus postage worldwide. Expect 3 weeks from the time of the order to the ship date. A deposit of 50% will secure your order.

I am posting a few examples of Octavio's work so you can see the process and final product. If you have any interest, please pm me and we can discuss the details.

Very best,

Nicholas

I wonder if he would cut me a deal if I found a portrait of someone that was very similar...

I'm the one on the bottom...

sorry Nick...I couldn't resist...way too much time on my hands...

Looks pretty interesting Nick. Now who is that distinguished looking young British officer; one of Wellington's cousins?;):D

Wow - Gideon, that was a bit harsh. These are as advertised and I think that it captures the portrait of the person well in the two examples.

Now I think the price is too high for the detail shown in these examples. While I would not expect a Dutch Masters style painting, I would expect it to match in color and shading of the original.

I think if one wanted to have their face on a famous painting, it could be done a lot better. For 900 I can get an exact copy of a Rembrandt in oils. Lots of art students are looking for work on the side.

Harsh? It is a fair question of something like this being offered for sale.

I wouldn't expect a Dutch master by any stretch but, as you say, I could get much better for the same money.

Fair enough Gideon,

Art is art and takes all forms. If that was a question, it might not have seemed harsh if you had followed it up with what you thought was still work in process.

You're not going to buy it, but it seems you wanted to leave some feedback, so give some instead of a one liner.

That's all I'm saying.

Matthew

I'm not really like that. People get very "sensitive" if you critique what they've made or what they're offering up.

Those paintings look incomplete so I asked.

Gentlemen:

Sorry for not responding sooner. Yes, these paintings are complete. Closeups photos were taken so that you could see the detail of technique. Seen from a little distance, as all paintings are meant to be, I think you might have a somewhat different opinion. In any case, you are certainly at liberty to ask.

Just two points of clarification though. The cost on these is not $900 to forum members. That is what this artist receives regularly for pieces this size. As I stated in the first post, these are available to forum members for $499 until Christmas. I doubt they will be available at all after that date. I should also note that Octavio made these available to forum members at my request and as a favor...and I am not making anything on these.

So if you aren't interested, that's fine...just move on. There may be some who are.

Many thanks,
