Died, 1 June 1879 aged 23, Natal, South Africa serving in the British Army.
Lieutenant Napoléon Eugène Louis Jean Joseph Bonaparte, prince impérial de France, only child of Emperor Napoleon III of France and his Empress consort Eugénie de Montijo.
Serving as an observer and halting with the patrol he was scouting with at a deserted Kraal, the Princes party was surprised by a group of Zulus as they had posted no lookout. Most of the patrol escaped though it did suffer other casualties. The Prince having had problems with his mount fled to a dried up gully which was to be where he made his stand.
