With the upcoming arrival of new Big Red 1 sets, I am considering putting together a small diorama in the coming months and would be interested in your thoughts on WS072. This would be my first vehicle purchase and I like the looks of it but have not seen it in person.

The main issue with this mold is all the foliage etc in the tracks, which is a similar situation with Honour Bound's Damaged Panther. I think both sets have suffered somewhat in sales because of this. Other than that it's a ok model which has some good paint work and interesting figures, and it is close to 1/30 scale.

Btw, you could also get the Afrika Korps Tunisian Tiger and do a Kasserine Pass or similar desert dio.

I've got it MD and I think its a pretty good model. The paintwork needs to be dulled down a bit and some more weathering added, but for the price, yeah, it's good value.

Cheers

This one was not a favorite of mine for the reasons mentioned by Oz. If you want a Panther then go with one of three HB Barkmann versions if any are still around. The price is a higher ($190?) but it's worth it in my opinion.

Thanks for the feedback. It sounds like probably a great price on a nice looking tank for my purposes. Aside from the bits of foliage and so on in the treads and it being a bit too clean looking, no major complaints, then?

Next question is regarding which infantry sets to use for Normandy in June/July 1944. Do WS050, 51 and 62 work in this setting?

MD

Combat is certainly correct in saying the Honour Bound Barkmann series of three Panthers all have better detail than the K & C Panther, and I actually have Barkmanns Panther (#424) in my collection. However the HB versions do have a more subtle paint work than the K & C which is typical eye catching K & C Normandy, but I think most people prefer the K & C coloration.

As for the Waffen SS figure sets you mentioned, I like them all. And I suspect at least one of these sets will be retired in the near future, at least that would be true time wise, but I understand they all are good sellers, so who knows

It's first rate, I have it and the other one they did a few years ago- I did a thread on it awhile back- Panters- Claw to Claw. While the HB Tank may look better, not sure it's that good to merit shelling out an additional $80 or so bucks.

I still for the life of me don't understand the whole "tank treads" issue that some of my fellow collectors have. Certainly some of the treads were bogged down and ugly during the Bulge and Stalingrad but for the most part, the roadwheels need to stay clear of junk and debris.

Either way, you can't go wrong- both have legitimate pros and cons.

Regarding your selection of infantry sets, I have WS051 and WS060 as well which are both very nice. I was also on the verge of getting WS050, but up close did not as good as in online picture. WS058 is another set I have which I think is also nicely done.

But these particular Waffen SS sets do work for Normandy in 1944?

It would be sort of a fantasy dio as very few Waffen SS units faced USA units, except in Hollywood.

Tell me more about that please. I've never really read anything about the German side of the story/experience so I'm admittedly quite naive in this area.

?????????????????????????? The Waffen SS didnt face the US. ?????????????????????????????? Malmedy Massacre ring a bell.

Gustavflyer, the battle for Normandy was June-July 1944.

The Battle of the Bulge started in the Ardennes (Belgium) in late December 1944, well after the battle for France had finished. The Germans attempted to split the British Commonwealth forces from the United States forces by attacking the American weak spot facing the mountainous Ardennes region and sweeping across to the Belgium port of Antwerp.

So these guys don't work for what I've got in mind. Any other suggestions?

MD

hi dave, i bought the k&C panther "ws072" and really like the tank,i actually had it winterized to go in my winter diorama, and it fit in just perfect, if you want to see it it's in the diorama page under {sammy 719 winter battle},it;s definitly worth the price compared with honour bounds panthers.......sammy

MD, I purchased WS072 and think it's a great piece. As HH mentioned the paint is a bit crisp compared to the battle damage effects but it's still a great buy for the money especially compared to the cost of the new armour coming out.

Does it 'have' to be Normandy Dave

The Big Red One did a lot of the hard fighting for the US Army. However IMHO it has been largely overlooked by Hollywood in favour of more elite units such as the 81st and 101st Airborne.

You can use the Big Red One figures in a number of different scenarios including the Battle of the Bulge or The Battle for the Hurtgen Forest. The later being the longest continual land battle in US history.

Wasn't the 81st Airborne assigned to fly the Ramjagers?:D:);)
