Having got the Japs, I have recently being getting the american Iwo Jima figures. Wasn't expecting much from them, but when I actually got them I thought the sculpting, poses and painting of the figures was superb. They are quite detailed and dynamic. Looking for ideas for a diorama and wondering if anyone has posted much on the Pacific:)

Apparently the Pacific theatre stuff is a poor seller, which is a shame considering the contribution made by the various allies there. If you check the member name 'Nick Nasta' you may be able to find some of the earlier dios he did for Figarti etc. He made several beach scenes with Marines attacking over beaches that had coconut lined embankments etc. There were also some 'Japanese Jungle Cave' dios with heaps of plants etc.

Btw, I have found on some forums that the term 'Japs' is considered offensive. I don't know why as Australians use it all the time being a shortening of the term Japanese, same as 'Aussies' for Australians in our minds. A double standard perhaps, which is of course partly why Brits and Aussies are baddies in movies these days, they can't pick on anyone else without being accused of being racist.

I'll check out Nick's Posts, sounds good,
Wasn't aware of the Japs being non-pc, wonder about other nicknames like yanks (i think I'm only getting that one now, as I think about it:D), limeys, jerries, ruskies,:D Apparently looking at wilkipedia its seen as derogatory in western countries only , commonly used in s.e. asian countries and apparently the japanese don't care too much about it in Japan!
Hard to keep up with all this PC stuff, ah well good to know , as wouldn't want to unknowingly put my foot in it:D

Aren't Aussies the baddies in every Kiwi movie :D Anyway, I hear backpacking isn't as popular in Australia as it used to be.

I don't know what they are feeding kids these days. I had a yard full of teenagers here recently for my son's 18th birthday and most of them were the size of a small house. I noticed a similar situation with younger American soldiers on tv, most of them were big chubby faced guys compared to the lean/mean soldiers of WW2.

I didn't know they had a Wiki page about it, interesting reading wasn't it.

If it doesn't worry the Japanese then why is it considered offensive in Canada, USA and UK?

I notice the Jap-enese(;))Soldiers are being retired, they didn't have a long life in production did they,i woner if they sell better than the Russians?.

In this country, because of political correctness, and the constitutional right not be offended by anything.

Prost!

This has nothing to do with PC. I remember attending a hearing about trade dumping in the mid 70s and the American trade representatives kept referring to the Japanese side As "Japs," to which the Japanese took exception and the Chairman of the International trade Commission told the US reps to refrain from using the term.

 I guess we better stop calling British people Brits ;)

I think one needs to be sensitive and polite and not use terms that people may regard as offensive. Just because a term is not regarded as offensive in one country does not mean it is not offensive somewhere else. There are racila words which in SA are highly offensive but in another country people would not even know them Similalrly there are terms of abuse from the US which in my neck of the woods would not be considered a problem. But on an internationla forum I would think it best to avoid them.

Well, right, in that case, it was insensitivity and uncouth. "Japs" has never had anything but a perjorative sense in English, even if, in a given context, it was only mildly perjorative. It was never polite. The Japanese delegates were right to be offended.

Delegates to an international conference, acting as quasi-diplomats (or maybe they even had credentials of some kind) should have known better. That's like going to a US-Mexico trade conference and having the Mexicans refer to the Americans as gringos.

What I was thinking of was that someone might purge a historical reference, sacrificing accuracy for feelings. But then, there were manners long before there was ever the notion of political correctness.

Prost!

We speak English in Australia (of sorts) and the distinction that I have been TRYING to make is that the term has NEVER had a perjorative sense in Australia. Aussies just tend to shorten words.

And Gringos is a slang term rather than a abbreviation of American.

But I do see your point.

I blame a diet of Commando and Victor comics:D There were a lot more perjorative comments in there than already mentioned. :D:D

True, but we didn't turn out so bad. After all we are still one of the few truly egalitarian societies in the world.

As I have said one has to be slightly more sensitive when one is on an international forum. Different words have different implications in different countries. We should leave it at that and move on. The term was used by the way with no real intention and that I accept but do we continually need to discuss its appropriatenss. I think we should all move on and accept that some people find teh temr offensive and simply not use it on the forum.
