I have been having a difficult time deciding if I want to add FJ005 "Returning Fire" or WS058 "Fighting Patrol" to my collection. I am leaning towards WS058 since the FJ holding the MP40 looks a bit strange to me. It seems like the MP40 is way to big for the figure. Is it just me or is the picture deceiving? I would appreciate any input about this set from any1 that has it.

Just my opinion, but I don't think the MP40 is that far off. I just put it side by side with one in the WS58 set and it's about 2mm longer.

That said, the Fighting Patrol set is that cool, I'd go for that one out of the two. One of my favourite sets.

Difficult call this one,i have both and they are fine sets in my opinion.I would maybe just give the edge to 'Fighting Patrol' but only just.I very much like the kneeling and standing firing figures in 'Returning fire' but not so keen on the guy who is sort of 'leaning'.That is the only way i can decide between them, so Fighting patrol by a whisker.

Sahara,

i had the same exact question a few weeks ago and tilted to the FJ.

The newer releases have better, smoother sculpting, and more dynamic colour tone.

Anyway with the release of the new SS figures this month, you will find that if you put the new releases close to the the older waffen ss releases, they will look kinda funny when grouped close together. if you look carefully, the older releases are bigger, bulkier whereas the new sculpts are more lean, smaller and brighter tone. this same thing affected my DAK display.

But that's just me being very particular (as usual).

But if you're not too particular, or are buying the WS058 as a stand alone piece, i think they're great.

my 2 cents.

sincerely,

nasir kasmani.

The Para set is great, especially the kneeling down firing figure:D:eek:

Captured Tommy is a great set too:D:eek::cool:

Thats what makes this decision tough for me. I love the kneeling and standing figures as you say in "Returning Fire" but the figure with the mp40 just doesn't do it for me. In away I want to get "returning Fire" because it will complete my German Paras but on the other hand I have been wanting to get "Fighting Patrol" for some time now. If I had the money to get them both right now it would be a no brainer but I'll probably have to wait until late Sept. or early Oct. to get the second set and by that time I'm sure there will be alot of new releases out that will put 1 of the 2 sets on the back burner again since I'm already itching to buy the 1/2 track.

I can really identify with your decision, its one that happens to me all the time. However now i understand your problem a little clearer i (as a completist)would go for 'Returning Fire'.If it was me i'd want to complete the range(so far i have the first five FJ sets).Fighting Patrol is obviously popular and a good seller as its been around for ages, theres no reason you can't go back for it.There is also the fact that sometimes you don't actually want to play catch up all the time and want something new.I for instance am buying mostly retired stuff between now and xmas and then at the London show in December am having a spending spree on new stuff. That way i get to catch up and also get new stuff now and again.Thats my plan of attack anyway:)

As mentioned on this thread the FJ05 are cleanly sculpted, and the figure leaning to one side does look odd, but I've found him useful for looking around corners or peering into a doorway.. I got both sets, but if you had to go for one I would go for WS058 as the detail, ie camo, is done very nicely. One deciding factor may be of course is that both sets are made for different scenarios, one action the other "rest area/marching". As a side note I've also noticed that the WS058 look a little bit lean, so much so that I thought perhaps they were Hitler Youth.

Thats a very good use of the leaning guy.I place him near to the weapon cannister and he looks like maybe he just retrieved something from it.

Well I made my decision I went with my needs over my wants and got FJ005. I really wanted WS058 because I thought overall it was the better looking set and it intrigued me more then FJ005. However, with the purchase of the FJs I'm finally caught up and have completed this series. Thanks for everyones input it helped alot.

I still don't like the looks of the figure with the mp40:D

Excellant, now just order the other set!;)

Hey Sahara, how could you not get WS058:eek: :D It's one of their best and most popular sets. Of course I mostly display non firing figures so the choice was easier for me. I haven't bought any FJ sets yet as like the allied soldiers their uniforms are to bland, I gotta have that camo look.

Trust me I really wanted to grab WS058 but the deciding factor was mainly finishing off a series. I only like 2 of the 4 poses in the FJ set as opposed to WS058 where I like all of them.

I'm already trying to work something out, 1st off I tried begging the wife to let me get the second set.....that didn't work:( 2nd I was thinking about sneaking it and putting it on one of my credit cards but I thought she would get to the mail 1st and either receive the package or get the bill before I did and then I would be busted:( 3rd and Finally I'm thinking of selling one of my beach landing sets or eastern front sets to acquire this set:( The only question is which one do I want to part with.

I have WS058 and while I like the set I probably wouldn't buy it today. I bought this when I was still quite new to the hobby and wasn't so picky. This was released during K&Cs Italian camo in each SS set phase. I am so glad this seems to have ended.

I am just looking at FJ005-07. While I concede the MP40 may be a tad out of proportion so are the Kar98s. They look short (should be 37mm in 1/30) to me. Maybe it's because they are a little chunky. I suspect they'd be to fragile if made exactly to scale. This is good looking set that I would consider if I was into that range.

Between the two I would go for the FJ005 as a more authentic set.

I can't say that the Italian camo issue has ever been a problem for me as I'm not to familiar with what camo was used where. The next thing you know I'll be getting a Rammjager - but don't tell anyone ok ;)

Sometimes not knowing is really bliss.

i have a few Waffen SS/Whermacht uniform books, and being a particular collector, these books had already stopped me from purchasing a few sets i desperately like.

though i am happy at my perceived historical accuracy in my collection, i feel kind of sad too, missing out on some excellent figures - like the cool SS Das Reich smoking panzer crew smoking from WS099.

I'm not knowledgeable on uniforms, what are the issues with the camo?

With this set, as Frank (fmethorst) mentioned, during these releases, the figure set tend to have at least a figure wearing the Italian Camo (as depicted in the tanker figure in my previous post)

Historically however, for the SS at least, distribution of these camo were strictly for 1st SS LAH (the SS Division occupying Italy at that time {after the fall of Mussolini}) and SS LAH's sister division, the 12th SS Hitlerjugend.

Is it a question of repainting it?
