This is an early rendering of Winston Churchill, in gloss. It doesn't look like him all that much but still a cool piece.

I am not the seller.

Brad,

Thanks very much for pointing this out.

I went right past this listing without recognising the figure as Churchill.

The K&C DD55 of Churchill at Normandy is a great improvement.

I think this is one of the best figures of Churchill ever made.

This was my first K&C figure ever from Bill Sager.

Best, Raymond.:)

Looks like someone made a pre-emptive offer and got this item.

Brad,

I am not sure if the item was sold.

The completed listing states "The seller ended the listing early and cancelled all bids".

If the figure had a better likeness to Churchill, I would have joined the party.

Perhaps, it may re-appear again listed as Churchill.

I think Brad is right on this one, more then likely someone contacted the seller and made an offer that was accepted.

Gee whiz I hate to think ebay lost a selling fee!:D

I know you're very, very, very, very upset about that

Wonder how much was paid.

So, I guess this one has to be written off as gone.

The maximum bid on the figure at the time of end of listing was USD $101.00, if that is anything to go by.

Some vintage Churchill figures are now fetching between USD $100.00 to $200.00.

I have lost two in the last 2 weeks.

I take it you were bidding on it? The item hasn't gone more than $132 since I've been tracking them. Sometimes those pre-emptive bids are higher than you might expect.

I sat on this one watching it with an intent to place a late bid.

Early bidding on the part of propective buyers on a "hot" item serves only to ramp up the bid price way beyond the open market value.

However, making a late run for it also has a big downside.

You took the right approach. I never see the point in throwing early bids unless it's real token. I can never understand who get into a bidding war in the beginning.

Don't feel to bad, this piece pops up on Ebay at least a couple of times a year. Quite often it goes unnoticed, and there is a good chance you will pick it up at a nice price.....if you keep an eye out for it!:)

Its not like some of the other pieces that usually have a half dozen people you have to contend with.

Good luck!:)

Hi Njja,

Thanks for the kind words of encouragement.

That is the way it goes with collecting retired pieces.

You win some and you lose some.

At the end of the day.....no big deal.

Best Regards, Raymond.:)

My pleasure Raymond, one thing I have learned over the years you can find

anything you are looking for if you just keep looking!

When I first started collecting Lionel Trains a Standard Gauge Blue Comet

was a really big deal! People talked about them all the time, many had never

even seen one except in books. If one showed up at a train show or if a

fellow had one it was quite a big deal.

One winter night I got a call right at dinner time. The end result was a

Standard Gauge Blue Comet sitting on my dining room table!:D It was found

at a home less then a mile from mine! Within 3 months I had a second! Soon

the phone calls made me a bit nervious and I decided to pass both on to

other collectors.......heck I was only 27 at the time and had just bought my

first home. You can find anything you want.....you just have to know where

to look, and be very lucky!:)

Thanks very much for your interesting reply, Njja.

It is very nice of you to share your experience in collecting the Standard Gauge Blue Comet by Lionel Trains.

I guess the take home message would go something like this:

"A collector can find just about most things he wants if he perseveres in looking in the right places at the right time. A good measure of patience and luck also helps."

Kind Regards, Raymond.:)

ps: I love your breakfast spread, the hot beef sandwich, the meatball sub and strudels (in your albums)

Raymond:

Yes the wife is a great cook......but I am passing on all the extra "goodies"
now as I continue to work on the wasteline!

Good luck with your hunt, many times the search is almost as much fun as
opening your find when it arrives!

I find the pieces I have with the most interesting storys are often the ones you enjoy the most. Anyone can walk up and put down a pile of cash for something......but to find a hidden treasure, that is the real fun of the hobby.:)
